I'll trust that over a guy that lives in a whackadoodle fantasy world regarding how GMs make their picks.

That said - I don't mind a bit if my team reaches a bit when they come away with an impactful player at a position of need. And I think they may have done that with this pick.

With 2 picks in the 4th shortly thereafter, he/they must've thought there was a good chance Jones wasn't going to be there 18 picks later.
He was the last corner available out of all the corners I really wanted.  I like Green as well, he's a beast outside man corner that most predicted that he would go in the 3rd or 4th but went in the 2nd.  I don't think he was a reach because a lot thought that, they just very well could have been wrong.  Some people see a player taken earlier than some mocks and think it was a reach.  The mocks might just be wrong from real teams boards.

Lolol, yeah man I'm sure you know what 99% of the football world thinks, what a reach lol.   We really won't know if he was a reach until about 2 years, so we shall see.  A lot of the mocks I done he was gone before we even picked at 96 so what does that mean?  The mocks reached?

I usually try to form my own opinion on a player instead of just going off what others say.  If they aren't Jags fans the majority don't even know how what type of defense we run and what type of players we need.  Kind of like we likely didn't have Sainristil as high as Washington since he's more of a zone based corner, he was in college at least. The players rating will vary team to team based on scheme and what teams like to do.

You are actually one of the few Jags fan I have seen that thinks he is a reach. I check out all of the guys that follow the Jags on YouTube, reddit,  podcast ect. that follow the team I don't remember any of them that thought Jones was a reach at the back of the 3rd, if there were it was very few.  No team runs man more than us, one of the best man corners and slot corners in the draft we got at the end of the 3rd.  Not a reach imo but we will find out in the future

Every prospect ranking I've seen prior to the draft had him going 120-150.

Every draft analysis I've read from national writers called it a reach.

Like I said - I don't care about any of that if he becomes an impact player before year 2 of his rookie deal concludes.
And there's a good chance that happens sooner for this guy.

Yep

And I'm fine with that strategy if the pick works out.

1. Josh Allen - Extended - Shows growth as a franchise.

2. Mitch Morse - Signed - Shows the ability to admit a mistake and fix it.

3. Foyesade Oluokon - Extended - Shows the ability to retain talent. As well as a great leader.

4. Brian Thomas Jr. - Selected - Not only did they decide that Gabe Davis wasn't the answer to losing Ridley - They went out and landed a WR1 to grow with Lawrence - While also picking up a 3rd and 4th RD selection in next year's draft. Shows the ability to understand value and competence.

5. Arik Armstead - Signed - Adding a veteran presence that has played well and has been apart of some really good and talented defensive fronts.

Those five moves standout to me more than anything. I actually really like the Jarrian Jones selection. Already said it in the college forum or somewhere around here. That's my favorite selection out of this entire class. I don't see that selection as a reach.

Jones was considered the top nickel CB in this class by a few sites and his energy, his play and his flexibility is much needed here. He'll benefit from a loaded front seven.

I wanted one more IOL drafted, I would have went in that direction one more time over Jefferson at NT or Robinson at KR. However, I understand the thought process there. I don't mind them getting a strong behemoth to play NT on this defense when needed. I don't mind another KR given the new rules and I don't mind the selection of a Kicker neither. We need one.

Myles Cole, low key? That's a damn good developmental prospect to bring along slowly. He'll learn from Allen, Walker & Armstead. He could very well find his place here sooner than expected if his measurables are as advertised. It's not like he was playing with a boatload of talent at Texas Tech on defense. He'll have his opportunities here to get isolated.

Back to the offensive line though. They did draft Foster, an All-SEC tackle that can play left or right side. Had a high PFF mark in the play action game and run blocking department. They have Cooper Hodges coming back. They also picked-up Jones out of Oregon. An absolute whopper of a guard that could very well make this team as the 9th or 10th man to also develop.

Don't sleep on Steven Jones. Six years in college. Plenty of starts. Played good last year for a team that ran the ball well and helped get Bo Nix drafted on the opening night. He'll be fun to watch I think this summer. There's a lot to be happy about and to look forward to in my opinion.

To me, the signing of Steven Jones changes the complexion of the draft. My issue is that they didn’t select a starting quality lineman. They’re both backup/ developmental. I’d still like to see them dip into free agency.

The thing is though which team were they ranking him for?  He's one of the best man corners and Nielsen runs more man than any DC in the league.  Or was the ranking for one of the teams that run more zone defense than any team?  That player ranking is the same for both teams?  A ranking doesn't make any sense unless it's assigned to each team and they know what teams want to do and schemes.

If Derrick Henry was getting a player rating coming out he would have the same rating for a run heavy power based team vs a team that runs a zone based blocking scheme that likes to throw it around and throw it to there backs?  I think a lot of these rankings piggy back off other sites.  I don't trust a lot of the player ratings.  I think a lot of Jags fans have seen him play much more than a lot of these sites giving him a rating being every Florids St game comes on in this area so they know more about what type of player he is imo and I'm a Gator fan.  We shall see though if he was truly a reach or not in the near future.

Jags have 28 mil in cap space.

Still some backup level guards and centers out there. Maybe a couple of older starters with questionable durability.

All good points! They should have added another interior offensive lineman, as you indicated. They could have taken Bortlini or McCormick in round 4 instead of Jefferson. I'm not totally down on Jefferson, however, as a true nose tackle to help stop the run. Foster was a good pick since they have 2 tackles who will be free agents after this season.

Not sure if you heard the interview today on Frangie show with LSU defensive line coach. Admittedly, not an unbiased source along with the biggest homer of all, Frank Frangie! Despite that, he spoke glowingly of Maason Smith and his best football being ahead of him. He noted that it took Smith a while to get back to form following his ACL, but saw definite improvement at the end of last season. I expect him to need a year at the NFL level to begin demonstrating his elite potential due to lack of experience in college. Hopefully he will contribute enough this season, especially if Hamilton is still not 100%. The coach also noted how Jefferson only played one season at LSU after transferring from Missouri, but showed much improvement at the end of the season. He has unreal strength and may become the 1st effective true Nose tackle the team has had in a long while. Both players have great work ethics and never got into any trouble, which is nice to know. I must say I liked the "helmet throwing" incident against Christian Haynes. Nothing wrong with defensive linemen who play with attitude, as long as they don't commit stupid penalties!

Great post my man.  The first 5 moves show how much we have grown as a franchise. Getting the MEC has changed a great deal of how the team is seen amongst the players in the league and we were in the top quartile of the league in the anonymous player questionnaire. Gabe Davis and Mitch Morse both stated that they wanted to come to Jacksonville.

The move to trade down was an absolutely brilliant move in that we got an extra 5th this year and an extra 3rd and 4th rounders next year.  This move gives us much more flexibility for future moves.  I really like to have options. Remember when we got Marcel Dareus for a future 5th rounder?

Respect the game.  Play with a sense of urgency.

1.)  Take care of the ball.  Win the turnover battle.

2.)  It's all about 3rd down.  Win on 3rd down to win the game.

3.) Playmakers make plays.  The only reason that you put your uniform on is to make plays. In order to EARN your paycheck, you must make plays.

Learn from the great collapse of 2023.

The bolded was sarcasm lol.  Do mocks actually mean something?  The are something to do for fun but they are fiction so no they dont actually mean anything, they are fun to do though to see how many you can get right if any.  Its like filling out a March Madness Bracket.  When you fill out your bracket for March Madness do you think that means something?

Is that an exact quote?  Because Jefferson definitely didn't transfer from Missouri.  Mehki Wingo did so maybe that is the confusion.

You are correct that he transferred from another school- West Virginia. I honestly can't recall if the coach named the incorrect school or if that was my mistake. Regardless, this coach's admittedly biased comments about his 2 players were encouraging. Time will tell if these 2 picks were good ones. I'll also be following the performances of Kris Jenkins, Zach Frazier, Bortellini and McCormick as these were players I may have taken instead of Smith and Jefferson. Smith is obviously the key in all of this due to his extremely high ceiling as well as the realistic chance that he never reaches that potential.

2 from that staunch LSU defense
