I don't think I've ever seen a stranger offseason than what the San Fran is going through right now.

Davis is "retiring" for a year. That ship is sinking. It's nuts.

Per rotoworld:
Definitely a strange situation. Complicating the matters is the fact that he'll be required to pay back some of his unearned signing bonus money, on which he already paid taxes on.

Anthony Davis | SF
(June 5, 2015 9:26 PM EDT)
"Retired" 49ers RT Anthony Davis tweeted Friday that he plans to return to football "in a year or so."
The Niners will maintain Davis' rights, and his contract will be "tolled" during his time away. "I'll be 26 or 27 years old," tweeted Davis, referring to his planned return to football. "I'm taking this time to allow my Brain and Body time to heal and recoup." Davis is currently under contract through 2019. He'll be under contract through 2020 after sitting out 2015.

dont think there has ever been a team with a worse offseason. They better hope Kap turns it around this season. The season now pretty much relies on him. The defense will no longer carry the load either

Bowman's health will be huge for the team also. Im thinking they will have the worst record in the division

Another note is Bowman is coming back from a ACL injury, so i will pay close attention to the way he comes back and hope Fowler can do the same

If Kaepernick doesn't, this looks like a five win team in 2015.

Jim Tomsula: One and done? Remember, he was only their consolation prize when Adam Gase turned them down in the first place.

There is another odd thing about this story.
Tomsula said he wasn't surprised this would happen.
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/201...etirement/
They apparently even considered this to be a possibility pre draft and free agency.
Yet this is who they drafted...
http://www.ninersnation.com/2015/5/8/857...dont-panic.
So they thought this might happen and did nothing to mitigate this?
By my count, they have lost at least two OL from last year (actually both of their first round picks from a few years ago).
They sign Erik Freaking Pears?
This on top of all of the other retirements?
I don't see how in the world this team wins more than 5-6 games this year.

Quote:There is another odd thing about this story. It was mentioned on PFT (I believe) that the 49ers (not Eagles...time for bed) think Alex Boone can play either tackle position. With Joe Looney and Daniel Kilgore, a couple of solid interior linemen, on the roster behind him, I think it's a pretty safe bet that Alex Boone is the 49ers right tackle this year, and I think he was the contingency plan all along.

I think there was a reason Boone fell as far as he did, as well as there being a reason they moved him inside. I don't think he is a viable T candidate-on the right or left side.
Not that I feel sorry for them...I don't.
But this seems to be an unnatural football disaster...almost deliberate.
If all that transpired happened over the course of 2-3 seasons, it would be easier to wrap my head around it.
But over one offseason?

i have a feeling it has a lot to do with the inner workings of the team. maybe these guys dont like the idea that the 9ers let harbaugh go?
who knows, but there has to be a reason for that much activity.

With Willis...maybe the injuries had something to do with it. With Justin Smith...maybe age.
Everyone else?
I think a lot of these players are making a statement.

It's the Fukushima Effect. The left coast is getting bathed in isotopes.

I somewhat agree, but I think it has more to do with these players seeing the writing on the wall that they are no longer Super Bowl contenders. Letting go of a very good head coach who had once led the team to three straight conference championships and a Super Bowl appearance for a position coach signals a change in direction/expectations. Would Willis and Smith have retired if they truly believed they had a good chance to win it all? I don't think so.

The reality of Gabbert being an injury away from starting is too much for the players to handle.
