What relatively noteworthy quarterbacks do you guys think are on the chopping block in training camp or preseason?
I'm curious mostly because I'm hoping we don't have to rely on Chad Henne to back up Blake this year. I think Henne is mentally checked out and I'm hoping there's a more motivated option back there.
The best backup quarterback is the one who's always gunning for the starting job.
Nothing about Henne has ever suggested to me that he's "mentally checked out", but his talent is questionable. If we need him for a game, we'll survive. If we need him for an extended stretch, we're screwed, but how many teams can really say that their backup QB could carry them for a large portion of the season?
Usually, you'd say that the incumbent QBs on teams that drafted quarterbacks in the top two picks of the draft, but Mike Glennon and Zach Mettenberger are both young and cheap enough that they're likely to stick. Jay Cutler is another obvious choice, but the backup plan in Chicago is Jimmy Clausen--Cutler's not going anywhere. I can't think of any other easy cuts at the position. Plenty of veteran backups will hit the street during camp, possibly those on teams that drafted mid-round QBs, but no one really screams "not a chance of sticking" to me off the top of my head.
Same here. There's been nothing to indicate Henne has mentally checked out. That's a pretty ridiculous assertion to make.
I'm sure Blaine Gabbert will be on the chopping block. Not sure why we'd want him though.
Luke McCown could probably be cut too, but we don't want him either.
One of Matt Moore or Josh Freman will probably be available, but if we're going former Dolphins QB, then Henne's probably the best of them.
Murica' will probably be available. But... yeah.
Mike Kafka? I doubt he's underwent a serious metamorphosis.
They're all 'noteworthy', but mostly for the wrong reasons.

He was a new level of bad last year. I don't know what to call it, but even at a backup position I don't feel comfortable with him stepping in for any amount of time. I've almost forgotten if I'm supposed to feel that way about a backup quarterback or not.
I guess I should reserve my judgement for this preseason but he is certainly capable of better play than what he displayed last year, all things considered. The scenario of him coming into the game for Bortles and continuing to play like that scares me.

Henne wasn't a new level of bad, the offense around him was a new level of bad.
Henne just lacked the athleticism to have a fighting chance against the pass rush.
Johnny Highball will probably be available.
I'll be surprised if any QB becomes available on the open market in August or early September who is a better short term option for the Jaguars as a # 2 QB than Chad Henne. The familiarity Henne will have in Greg Olson's system after months of learning the playbook and working with the Jags Offensive players and Henne's intangibles very likely will exceed any cut at the QB position by another team.

Henne hasn't shown any signs of mentally checking out, from what I have seen from him.
The thing with Henne is that his talent never really checked in.
Henne is what he is, and we have already seen exactly what he is already.
I dont expect us to line up to take on another team's cast off. This is Henne's last year on his contract. Look for us to draft a developmental QB in next years draft.
Henne's contract has significant escalators for playing time and success. I would not make the assumption that he would not like to outperform Bortles and start, or that he has mentally checked out. However, he's a smart guy and understands the reality of his situation as a backup. He is making $3.5m in base salary this year...not too shabby for his role.
I would like to see them pick up an upgrade to their number 3 developmental QB role.

How much of that was on Henne, and how much of it was simply the fact that we had all sorts of line troubles, a very young receiving corps, and no running game to speak of? Is that all his fault because he checked out?
Henne is the best option to back up Bortles. He hasn't mentally checked out. If he's called upon, there are plenty of incentives for him to do well, bot contractually with escalators, and for future reference if he wants a job in the league beyond this year.

Being that Eli Manning is in the final year of his contract, it's possible, not probable that BOTH the Broncos and Giants will have new starting QBs in 2016.
Unless the Saints salary cap situation forces them to go in another direction, my guess is Drew Brees will be with them at least through the 2016 season.

It would be ironic, to say the least.
If the Giants in 2015 have another losing season, it's almost certain Tom Coughlin won't be back in 2016. G.M. Jerry Reese also could be looking for work. If the Giants have a new G.M. and HC in 2016, the chances of Eli Manning ending in Denver to replace his older brother increase substantially.

I think Coughlin's seat would be hotter than Reese's in that scenario. That said, if Coughlin is fired/forcibly retired, Manning's play probably would have a lot to do with it, and it'd be hard for Reese to sell management on keeping Eli around. Even if the Giants do squeak into the playoffs and save Coughlin's job, I think Eli's proven over the years to be inconsistent enough that they strongly consider drafting his eventual replacement in the first couple of rounds next year.
