Full Version: I think we should draft another pass rusher next year

First off, this isn't a knee jerk to the ACL injury, it's something that's been in my mind since we took Fowler. In terms of the context of this draft, Fowler was definitely the #1 defensive player. He can do everything you want from an edge rusher and plus plays with a high motor and passion, and can definitely be a key piece on a championship team. THAT SAID, I don't think he will ever be that truly dominant pass rusher that's a mismatch nightmare and can just beat guys with sheer speed or power. He doesn't project those measurables, and it doesn't show up on tape. I think ideally Fowler is a high end, complimentary piece of all complimentary pieces on an elite defense, sort of like a rich man's Ahmad Brooks. Ideally he will be the guy who you can just put all over the field and have him reek havok, while a more natural pass rusher is at LEO. I think that's who he is and I'm pretty sure eventually Gus/Dave will realize that. He can hold down the LEO position, but I think if a better, more pure pass rushing option presents itself next year we should take it. If we're picking high enough to get Bosa next year then we probably have a lot bigger problems than LEO, but, if he's there somehow when we pick and we're around 8-10 we should take him.

I don't get the Bosa love; the dude is slower than molasses. He's consistently late getting off the ball, and he uses his size/strength to dominate. That ain't gonna work in the pros.

LEO very well may our number 1 priority again next offseason. Depends on a lot of factors.

Not a Bosa fan either.

Oakman, Nkemdiche, Fuller. Pick 1.

im sure you guys have heard me say the same about Bosa. he could change my mind this season, but there are a few other guys who i could see at the top.

everyone wants the next JJ Watt now though, and Bosa with a quick eye test looks the part.

Oakman is a freak of nature though, if they wanna take Bosa at the top and let oakman slide... so be it.

Really depends where we pick and who is there. I'm definitely not opposed to another pass rusher. Clemons is getting old and Branch may not be much. Fowler is coming off an acl and you can't have too many pass rushers.

Just gotta see which prospects are available though. I personally think the edge rusher crop next year is slightly weaker at the moment. DB and OT seems to be stronger towards the top
A couple of things on Oakman.

He will be 24 when next year's draft comes around. That is a good three years older than some of the other guys in the same class.

Has there ever been a dominant defensive lineman at 6'8 or 6'9 besides Too Tall Jones? Not that I can remember and he played 40 years ago.

Uhhh If there is a true number 1 WR or a shutdown CB, draft is a long ways away. lets let this thing play out on where were drafting

I would love Nkemdiche

i wouldnt not draft a guy because he is bigger than the norm.

sure you would love him to be 20 or 21 but if he turns out to be that much better than the others, who cares?

right now he is my fav pass rusher in the draft.
Back to Back Gators??? hahaha i joke, i joke Vernon Hargraves is pretty dang good thou

FS/ILB should be our priority next year.

Jalen Ramsey

I agree I think Jalen Ramsey is destined to be a Jag tbh. Looking at our needs and what is at the top of the draft, and where I think we will pick (around 8-10) I'd be shocked if we didn't take one of the DBs. I was just throwing it out there with the pass rusher, even though upon further thought Bosa would probably be the 5T/Big End in our defense with some maneuverability to put him inside at 3T sort of like Odrick. He wouldn't be the LEO in our defense.

As for linebackers next year, we definitely need them, and the top two, Scooby Wright and Miles Jack, are prime OTTO candidates. BUT, I'm not sure you take those two in the top 10-12 which is where we probably pick. Ramsey, Hargreaves, or  Sutton seem like the most likely picks. Then take guys like Leonard Floyd or Jaylon Smith in the second.

Looking at it, Fowler does seem to be more physically gifted than any edge rusher in next year's class, I'm just concerned he doesn't have the bend and speed-to-power conversion to consistently beat tackles off the edge. He has the speed and motor and unlike most of these edge guys he has size to go with it, he just doesn't seem like a natural, fluid pass rusher. I'm sort of concerned he's maybe a little better version of Cliff Avril or Ahmad Brooks rather than a true dominant pass rusher. Which I guess isn't so bad, the Seahawks won a super bowl with Avrill as their starting LEO. So what do I know.

Bosa is overatted

according to you so is jj watt. so is it even necessary to post that?
I see Hargreaves mocked to us in a few mocks I saw.
I see LB and secondary as the targets for our 1st round pick next year. I hope we have a WR emerge as our #1 (leaning towards Allen Robinson), so that won't be a "need". We could use a true #1 CB or just a playmaker in the secondary. Other than Telvin, we need some younger, more talented, modern NFL linebackers.

He really needs to show out this season...

That is what I was thinking. I don't think he has shown that he can be a dominant player.
People don't like Bosa but have no problem with Nkemdiche? Okaaaaay...
