Why do people think there's a trade opportunity available here?  Because San Diego hasn't worked out a contract extension?  That's not how it works folks.  I'm sure San Diego is desperately looking for a 5th round selection to trade away one of their better defensive players.  Makes complete sense.

An unhappy player in the final year of his contract is nothing new.  Sitting out voluntary workouts and practices isn't a sign that he's suddenly on the trade block. It's simply a negotiating tactic.  At the end of the day, he'll play in San Diego this year.

This would shore up the defense and provide a push for Cyprien with Sample competing for SS. I love this idea, trade a 5th and we have  legit FS who is a ball hawk!!!!

Not sure that is the point, we all know 99.9 angry players end up on there original team, its nothing new. This is a discussion board. In which ppl discuss all fun and possible angles. Hence the wishful thinking. chill..........

I don't think anyone realistically expects it to happen but it sure would be nice.
Pay him, Khan/
Quote:No. He is way over hyped and a poor tackler.

Hes less hyped and a better tackler than Polumalu was.
Quote:Why does this board immediately want to sign every player who's cut and trade for every player who's shown any signs of unhappiness with his current team?
Because we have a bunch of no-name players, and it's usually well-known star players that are being talked about in possible trade scenarios maybe?  We need a few of those.
Trading away picks for players 30 and above is generally bad business unless you are making a push for a Super Bowl.
Caldwell doesn't like giving up picks and plus the man is 30. We're rebuilding, you don't go out and get 30 year old players when you're rebuilding.
Being that San Diego decided to keep 12 year veteran QB Philip Rivers,  they seem like they are in a win now mode.   I don't think a rebuilding situation would go well with whatever efforts they have to land a new stadium in the San Diego area.

From a Chargers perspective,   unless a team offers them the moon and the sun,   it doesn't seem to make sense for them to trade Eric Weddle unless they fall out of the playoff race before the trade deadline.

Quote:Exactly. A 5th round pick in the past 2 drafts have netted us Telvin Smith and Rashad Greene. Would you trade Telvin for Weddle straight up? I sure wouldn't. There's a lot of good talent we could be missing out in the next draft.

Shoelace?
Quote:Yes he is a FREE safety not a STRONG safety. We currently have no Free Safety

We may have something with Sample. Draft and develop.
Quote:Uhh he does tackle well, but still a true FS I think we need that type of age in the secondary personally! We may not be one piece away but a lot closer than ppl may think. I'm also a sucker for UTAH guys, upset we didn't get Rowe, but fell in love with the yeldon pick soon after

And here i thought i was the only jags fan in UTAH...AWESOME!!

GO JAGS!

The Chargers have informed FS Eric Weddle that they will not discuss an upgrade to his contract.

Even after skipping Chargers Organized Team Activities, Weddle's agent says his client won't make a fuss. The sides have agreed to part ways following this season. "He'll be excited about playing this year and then hit free agency," said player rep David Canter. "We're disappointed and will continue to be disappointed. But Eric will go all out this season." Weddle is 30 years old. He'll collect $7.5 million in the final year of his deal.

Save a draft pick and discuss signing him next year if the team is interested.
Hopefully we won't have a need to sign a 31 year old safety next year.

Hopefully that's the case. Hopefully Sample or Brown work out. But if not our priority #1 FA target next year should be Tashaun Gipson.
A part of me thought that James Sample would play at FS with Brown at SS but with Sample's injury I suspect Cyprien will remain at SS with Brown at FS

Cyprien's not going anywhere this year. He was disappointing last season, but the coaching staff is in no hurry to replace him.
