so where do our other RBs stand, post-Yeldon ?

I think he's been chosen with this relatively high pick because they want him to shoulder the majority of the work. And that leaves Gerhart, Robinson, Storm and Pierce fighting for the scraps.

I think Pierce probably gets cut and Storm is on the edge too. Gerhart will probably get on more chance to shine as Yeldon's occasional stand in and Robinson is kept as a useful change of pace.
I think Robinson and Yeldon are 1a and 1b.

Word.
Yeldon, Bernard Peirce, Denard works in and returns punt, Gerhart should be cut

Yeldon will probably work more towards carrying the majority as the season wears on depending on what he shows the team. he needs to learn the playbook and improve his pass protection first.

gerhart should easily be the short yardage back.

denard is the change of pace guy and will be used creatively in 2 back sets.

storm and pierce need to show something in order to get any snaps barring injury.
It'll be interesting going into the season without a fullback.

If we carry 5, Yeldon, Robinson, Pierce, Gerhart, and Storm will easily make the roster.
Yeldon will likely get about 240/250 carries and be the main back. Robinson will be the change of pace guy. Gerhart will play a FB role but still will back up the other guys. Pierce vs Storm will be whoever plays special teams better. Unless we get a late round RB that does better on special teams then both guys may be gone.

Well Dave said they plan on carrying 5 RBs due to not having a FB in the roster. That means:

Yeldon gets the nod as the starter, and IMO, Pierce becomes his immediate backup. He's a veteran, has experience in ZBS. Third down passing downs, Toby and Pierce will see some action due to their pass catching ability. Denard remains a gadget play option. Denard and Storm also will be ST bodies.

You don't spend a 2nd round pick, tout his 80% or whatever conversion rate and then take him out on critical short yardage downs to get first downs  or TDs.
It's Denards job to lose in my opinion. Pierce shouldn't even make the final 53. And if he does he and storm should rarely see the field. Yeldon and Shoelace will be a very good 1-2 punch.
Pierce, Johnson cut

Yeldon will start Day 1.
I think Yeldon's amount of carries depends on Bradley's philosophy about backs who suck at blocking. Some coaches play a back while others won't let a back on the field if he can't block. Yeldon is useless as a blocker.

They keep at least four. My guess is:

RB1: Yeldon

RB2: Robinson

RB3: Gerhart (also pseudo-fullback)

RB4: Storm Johnson

Pierce gets cut.

Personally I thought D-Rob was gonna have a breakout year this year.. He said he has gotten better and smarter than he was and stronger.... He showed some good things last year and finished with a 4.3 YPC avg..   I heard Dave said he will be returning kicks so that makes me think he wont be the starter which I'm dissappointed about. I think he deserves a shot this year.

maybe the plan is to let denard start and show some promise and then trade him while his value is at its peak.

having a lot of talent at the position is nice for once.

That sounds like the plan. If push comes to shove they could move on from Gerhart since him and Pierce are similar players.

If Denard has developed his ball security and strength, then its foolish to trade him at that point. Why? Because he'd have everything we want in a starting RB at that point.

Him, Pierce, and Yeldon are virtual clones, with slight variations. Our OLine better blast holes through the DLine.
I heard Caldwell say he would have the ability to carry 5 RBs due to no FB; I didn't hear him indicate he "planned" to carry 5 RBs.  I may have heard or remember it incorrectly.  I think he'll carry 4 RBs, and maybe keep an add'l TE/H-back type guy that can role into a FB role when needed.

I think the final RB spot is going to be a battle between Pierce and Johnson.

Dave said we have no use for a FB because our offense won't use one. We're looking at 2 TE sets and 3 WR sets likely as our base formations. If anything Toby will be the Hback swing back.
