Sorry, this isn't a post about the draft, it's a post about college football !

Months back, a couple of UK-based fans (one of them being me) were asking this forum for help in picking a college football team to follow. I don't know what conclusions the others came to, but I've just about decided (after a bit of light reading) to go with the "local" team - the Gators.

But, is there anything I need to know that might put me off ? Or for that matter, what are the compelling reasons for picking them as my team ?

theyre a team that is back on the rise. very good history of being a good team. the new coach is nothing but very promising with a track record of winning and turning teams around. the gators will always recruit really good talent with florida being a hot bed of florida talent. and i mean.... those colors arent too shabby either!
They've been down but they will be back up….its just how quickly?

Don't know much about the new HC offense…think its a pro-style so don't know how much excitement it will be. (a big reason I love college football is all the diverse and exciting offenses)

The Defense has been down as well but as was already stated they recruit well and can but a dominating defense back together.

A team that could be fun to watch this year is Ole Miss...

They currently have the "No. 1 LT/WR/DT prospects" according to Walterfootball in Tunsil/Treadwell/Nkemdiche. Their defense was one of the top last year and they run a fast paced read option pass heavy style of offense. Plus playing in the SEC there aren't to many crappy games.

I'm a UK fan and avoided the Gators and 'noles when picking a team. UCF is a good pick! The Jags connection and a bit smaller than the other two.

Thanks, there's also the attraction of being in Orlando, because it can be combined with a family holiday !

Thanks for the advice (from the other two posters) on the team too - it's Gators for me then...

Gators have enough fans,,, why not be original and do some research to find an adequate team.. For example, what do you enjoy most about college football? Do you watch it at all? Unlike pro, college football is full of David and goliaths,, do you want an underdog who competes with the big boys, or a team full of resources that barely has to lift it's voice to attract recruits... Don't just pick gators because they are closest to JVille,, the gators haven't donated a single dollar to improve the jacksonville jaguars. You owe them nothing. Do your research.

i have to say that most of this logic sounds bitter and bad.

What do I care whom he roots for, don't even know the guy. Just saying that there are a lot of teams out there; and maybe other than putting on a t shirt of the big name team in the state... Why not do some research and find out why you pull for them...

But hell I don't care go ahead and pull for em if you want.

Personally have nothing against them,, whole family went there. Only thing I don't like are t shirt fans, and that's mostly because of texas longhorn groupies

I think you'll find badly behaved sports fans supporting most teams.

Hernandez is certainly nothing to be proud of, but I don't think he's a big black stain on the organisation.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've done a bit of reading (as I mentioned in the original post) and considered some of the teams recommended in the original thread http://jungle.jaguars.com/index.php?/topic/8193-help-me-pick-a-college-team/page-3#entry357266

The Wolverines (because of Shoelace), UCF (because of Bortles) and the Minnesota Golden Gophers (I used to follow the Vikings before the Jaguars appeared) all interested me.

I ruled out some of the other big teams, either because they were too good or because I couldn't ever see myself visiting those places (visiting Florida and combing it with a Jaguars game is a lot more realistic than going to Ohio for instance).

I read up on the histories of a few of the teams and the Gators sounded like they had just enough success without being "too good" and a few players to be proud of.

And the colours played a small part too- there are a lot of very boring jerseys (and helmets) out there !

The playing style was the one thing I'd have wanted more info on - ideally I'd like a run- first power-team. But then, doesn't that change over the years, as coaches change ?

It does change of course unless the coach has staying power.

With coach Mac, you're looking at a guy who helped mark Ingram become the heisman when he was the OC of Alabama.... So I believe you will get your wish.
I cant help when reading this thread say hmmmmmm.. Advice man keep it simple! Just go watch some old games and highlights of the teams that interest you.. It sounds like Oregon would be the team for you in my opinion..

Except for the fact that he wants to be able to check out the Jags and whatever team he picks if and when he ever visits the States.
