Quote:Jaworski: Mariota will go No. 1 to Bucs
Marcus Mariota | CLG
(April 13, 2015 9:41 AM EDT)
ESPN's Ron Jaworski is hearing from his sources around the league that Oregon QB Marcus Mariota will go No. 1 to the Bucs.
Jaws is not a reporter and has no history of breaking news. He also made the comments on a local Philadelphia sports show, not nationally on ESPN. Still, it's a reminder that we wouldn't completely rule out the Bucs pulling a surprise and taking Mariota over Jameis Winston. The Glazer family has the final say on the pick and they reportedly are taking community relations into account.

Could this be the first surprise in the draft?
It would be surprising to me, but to hear Jameis's lawyer say that off the field he isn't ready for the NFL is pretty darn alarming.
If I were Jameis, that guy would have been fired 3 seconds after he said that....how do you say that in public?
Edit: This is also a really good way to generate interest in the Eagles coming up to number one to get their guy. After watching what Chip Kelly has done to this point in the offseason, I wouldn't rule it out.

If you read the thing about what Jameis lawyer said on ESPN, well they did that for clicks and made it as a big bad headline, the lawyer praised Winston on the field and said he was a lock to go number 1, and he pretty much said no kid coming out of college is ready for the NFL life, but ESPN made it out to be like he was blasting Winston just for a shocking headline.
Now as far as who will go number one, I think the coaches and scouts want Winston but, the owners want to think long and hard about it, not locks yet.

It was flattering by any means as it pertains to off the field:
Quote:"Jameis is ready to be an NFL quarterback on the field, but he is not ready to be an NFL player off the field," said Cornwell.
But Cornwell said the NFL has resources to help players with that transition. He said those resources were explained to Winston during his meeting with Goodell and Troy Vincent, NFL executive vice president of football operations.
"I told (Winston), 'Listen, if you decide not to avail yourself of these resources, you'd better have an option … because this league will chew you up and spit you out if you don't," said Cornwell.
"So our role is to make sure that first he knows what these resources are, and second that he avails himself of them. … He's not just a football player. He is a man who plays football. … We have to assist him in developing and growing as a person and becoming a man in this system, and it's not going to be easy."

That's not something you want someone saying about your possible face of the franchise QB. Especially with Johnny Manziel still fresh in everyone's minds. He tried to clean it up afterwards but the damage was already done.
I wouldn't be surprised. On the field the two qbs are clearly very different. The same as off the field.
I think talent-wise they're neck and neck. Its all going to depend on the direction the bucs want to go with their offense.
With lovie, you would assume he goes with the more pro style pocket QB, and with the pass catchers they have being on the taller and not as fast side, it seems like Winston would be the better fit to me.

ESPN and every other website reported it. What other players lawyer or "team" has ever said anything remotely close to what he said? Nobody, because nobody ever really thinks that....at least isn't dumb enough to say it about a player that has had as many off the field issues as him.
Talent wise, Jameis would be my pick all day. Up to this point I would still pick Jameis....but I would do my due diligence and make sure he keeps his head on straight. I would also put a clause in place similar to what was done with JB.
Jaws should stick to just watching film.

Not to argue but there is much more that the lawyer said than just that. Like the other poster said, the lawyer went on to say that nobody is ready to be in the NFL when they first step in. He said Winston is a tremendous guy off the field and on on. He said he felt he would go on to be great. This is an example of media twisting a story and portraying what they want to.

Because someone had the opinion that Mariota would go first and your chosen one wasn't the no.1 pick?
You are so sensitive.

Yeah. He backtracked (on twitter nonetheless) after he realized how damaging his comments were.

Regardless of how you look at it, his lawyer was an idiot for saying anything at all.

Now that last part is something I can't argue with.
I heard a good comment somewhere, that was basically, up to now, all the information about these guys, all the leaks about who likes whom, etc, have come from scouts, but now that we are only weeks away from actually making the selections, the GMs and the owners are getting involved. The scouts are looking at football talent, but the GMs and the owners have to look at these picks perhaps becoming the face of the franchise on and off the field. That could account for the change of heart about what QB the Bucs want.
