Full Version: One silver lining about Super Bowl 51

Yes, the way the Falcons choked away this game was sickening. Yes, I am tired of Brady, Kraft and Giselle always winning. However, there was one positive thing that came out of this game. The Jaguars would have made a huge mistake hiring Kyle Shanahan as head coach. His play-calling on the Falcons last drive cost them the game. Am I the only one who would have run the ball 2 more times when the Falcons were up by 8 with slightly more than 3 minutes to go with the ball on the Patriots 21 yard line? A field goal by Bryant would have iced the game unless the Pats score and then recover an on-sides kick. Instead, Shanahan has Ryan attempt to throw the ball leading to a sack followed by a 15 yard penalty. Sure, Ryan should have thrown the ball away, but why even try to pass?

Finally, the Jaguars made a good decision to not pursue a guy like this as head coach. I know they interviewed him, but regardless of the reason they made the correct choice in Marrone. If the 49er's were smart, they might go to Plan B. I know Shanahan's offense was great this year, but there was simply no excuse for how he cost the Falcons their 1st Super Bowl win and broke the hearts of long-sufferring Falcon fans.

Shanahan's play calling was has been quality throughout his career and was great all of this season until that stretch at the end. Big reason they lost but doesn't mean much in terms of him as a HC.
Or he could coach with a chip on his shoulder and be on a mission to erase this disaster his whole career

It can work both ways, but I feel for Atlanta fans.

It's a little different from the latest NBA and MLB champions, who were the underdogs that had not sniffed a championship in years, and both those teams made epic comebacks to win their respective titles.

Why did you include Giselle like she was on the field

Oh she's a winner, I tell ya.
Remember when Bellicheck went for it on 4th down and 2 from his own 26 against the Clots? Everyone questioned him, it was a bad call. I wouldn't let one or two bad calls define a career.

I think sometimes these gurus try to get too tricky and unpredictable. They think the other team will see the run up the middle coming and they try to do a short pass or trick play and it leads to disaster sometimes. Sometimes the really obvious call is obvious because it makes the most sense. Give Freeman the ball and smash it up in there, kick a FG. Just like Give Lynch the ball from the 1 and let him pound it in there.

After having the worst coach in the history of the NFL, I'd rather not follow him with the guy who was mostly responsible for the biggest choke ever in the Super Bowl.
The Jaguars are still quite a ways from silver lining status, hopefully that changes sometime soon, but we've been waiting for that for a while now.

Shanahan has guys like Julio Jones, Ryan, and Freeman to work with. I'm more impressed with the job Marrone did in Buffalo, with a team less talented than the Jags.

He sure won't have them next year in San Francisco.
No silver linings...  I lost my argument against Brady being the GOAT at the QB Position.  I can't stand the Patriots.  I'm glad I'm not a Falcons fan that factoid they ran showing the 1 championship claimed in Atlanta versus New England...  yuck.

You have to play to win.

Do we know if Ryan checked out of the play?

I mean... I'm right there with ya... up by 8 near the RZ. Run the ball, force them to use time outs, kick a FG. Down 11 with around 2 mins is a tall order for Brady.

Down 8 with 3 and some change? Cakewalk.

you mean when he had an unspectacular offense and let his top 5 defense carry him to 9-7

Hell, 9-7 is a dream come true for us.
