NFL hires Sarah Thomas as its first female official
The NFL is hiring Sarah Thomas as its first female official, according to multiple media reports.
A source told the Los Angeles Times that the NFL informed current officials that seven men and one woman were selected as new hires for the 2015 season. All of them will have to pass physical exams first.

I'd say it's about time, and long overdue for the NFL to be doing this.
She ain't too bad lookin either. Would be a nice break from lookin at ole Ed Hercules.
Maybe she'll do a strip tease at halftime.
Hope she never has a player run into her on the field. Could be nasty.

Hercules gives a gun show with every penalty. He wants to know where his beach ball went.

Headline says he "takes a shot" at her. Sure didn't read that way to me. Sensationalist morons at FOXsports. SMH.
I bet she'll be better than some of these fat, old, out of shape refs.

Eh, not any worse than some of the elderly they currently have at midfield.

Fareal smh... Only people he took a shot at was the NFL...
I wonder if her exam will be the same or if they will lower the standards for her?

Why in the world would they have to lower the knowledge standards for her?

Says they have to pass a physical exam. I'd imagine that would include some type of physical capability metrics.

True - but if some of those geriatric dudes they've kept around can pass it.....
She gonna' be just fine y'all.
Unless she blows a call in a Jags game.... then "WHAT WERE THEY THINKING!!!???"

It's more likely she will raise the overall quality of NFL officials.

That's actually a valid question. From my prospective working in/around the military, standards are different. Males and females could have the same job and rank, but yet the physical standard that the male must maintain is higher than that of the female.
In my opinion, there should be a set standard that relates to the job period. If someone wants to perform that particular job, then he/she must meet or exceed the standard.

How do you figure?
I think most people don't care about this hire so long as she's qualified.

It's not like this is a woman who is coming in, fresh out of her living room where she watched "a lot of football". She's been a referee since 1999. I really don't think the "massive" transition from running up and down an NCAA field to running up and down an NFL field is going to be all that traumatizing for her.
They won't lower the physical or knowledge standards for her. If she is the best candidate, regardless of gender, then good for her. If she is not the best candidate, but given the job over other more qualified candidates due to gender, then shame on the NFL. Either way for her, I wish her well.
