Full Version: Ultimate Defense Draft

On Bleacher Report, Chris Sims does a video in which he designs what he sees as our guide to building the ultimate defense by using the 1st 3 picks we have on defensive guys.

Here are the main highlights:

Round 1: LEO Vic Beasley - Best pure pass rusher, replace Clemons, size is fine, freaky athlete, powerful and fast. Stud.

Round 2: CB Bryon Jones - Perfect scheme fit, the Richard Sherman for us, fast and big, freaky athlete, destroys routes at line.

Round 3: DE Preston Smith - Our Michael Bennett, versatile to play entire line, depth, enormous, not best pass rusher, but hard to not like.

What would you make of this draft to this point? For me, I like how the line would be such a humongous strength for us between having some versatile players as well as some decent star type players and we would have quality depth. I like the Jones idea, because between our current CBs and him our CB spot would have tons of talent and depth. We would get our dominant LEO edge rusher and overall this doesn't look bad if we did go this way.

Jones -- Pass. House, McCray & Colvin already on roster.

Smith -- You forget that Michael Bennett has strong pass rush skills. I'm not opposed to Preston Smith for depth, but he's not a Michael Bennett clone.

Only if they plan on  playing Jones as a FS. (Which i believe the Jags are scouting him for)

SMH...

Jones would be the FS...

Smith had 9 sacks last year...he must suck with those pass rush skills...

Micheal Bennett had 6.5 his whole college career...

Beasley  (LEO)

Jones  (FS)

Best OTTO Candidate   (OLB)

^  this would make more sense to me for a "defensive themed" draft.    Of course  - they won't go defense with the first 3 picks, IMO.
Yeah, we won't go defense with the 1st 3 picks, this was just an "if they fully focused on making a strong defense and ignored offense" draft. In this, they explained why Jones is a CB and not a FS. Jones is wasted as a FS. He is a CB that can jam players at the line so well that their route is effectively ruined and has all the size and whatnot to matchup with WR.

That's a valid opinion on Jones - I just don't see the Jags taking a DB before the 4th round that isn't meant to play FS.  Just my opinion.

I fully agree with this. I think Sims take was that Jones has all the make and feel of a Richard Sherman, he directly says as much, and basically states that Bradley would love a guy like him. I am satisfied with our CB should they continue to grow.

I fail to comprehend why someone says Jones has a Richard Sherman "feel"

He can jam....... Cool, so can Sean Smith

Jones is WAY more athletic than Sherman.

Similar size as well. Added to the jamming and cover ability and there you go.
That would be an absolutely, perfectly awesome first 3 draft picks...unfortunately it's extremely unlikely that Byron Jones and Preston Smith are available at those picks now.

Every draft has a CB with good size, good coverage and press ability.

The fact of the matter is Sherman is not a player you can grab every year.
