The Trent Richardson trade alone is evidence that Pagano is not the problem in Indy. Put him with a competent GM, and the combination of Luck, Pagano, and a GM that isn't an idiot could produce a playoff regular for the next ten years.

Irsay was quite proud of that trade at the time and makes me think he had his hand in wanting splashes etc.
Here is what Peter King had to say about the Pagano situation:

Quote:

. I think Indianapolis coach Chuck Pagano coaching out the last season of his contract—regardless of whatever Pagano or any team official would say—means that something, either major or minor, is amiss. You do not let a coach with 36 wins in three years coach out his contract, particularly if you are intent on him staying and coaching your team beyond this season. Ian Rapoport reported a new deal won’t get done, and longtime Colts beat man Mike Chappelle reported Pagano turned down a one-year extension. Something just doesn’t feel right about it.

The new Cleveland browns?

Here's hoping!

Quote:The best coach they had is now in Arizona. They should have kept him there. Irsay won't hesitate to cut him loose though. He didn't play around with Caldwell once Dungy retired.
Arians is a good coach but wherever he goes, the QB is always hurt because of the offensive system that he likes to run. Arians runs a vertical down-field attacking offense which requires the QB to take 7-step drops and wait in the pocket for plays to develop.

If you think back to when he was the Offensive Coordinator of the Steelers, Ben Roethlisberger was consistently hurt every year. Since they've changed coordinators, Roethlisberger has been relatively healthy. Andrew Luck took a beating when Arians was the OC. This past year, we have seen Arizona's QBs (Palmer and Stanton) get injured. It's no coincidence that they did. Arians' offense is very hard on QBs.
Irsay has offered Pagano an extension with a modest raise. Pagano is already paid handsomely for a first time coach.

Pagano makes more than Fox, Whisenhunt and Caldwell, who have been to the Super Bowl. He makes slightly less than Jason Garrett and Lovie Smith. A modest increase may have put him on the same level as them. He makes more than Ron Rivera, who signed an extension last year. He makes more than Rex Ryan, a retread who was a hot commodity. Other first time head coaches -- Mike Zimmer, Todd Bowles, Mike McCoy, Gus Bradley, Joe Philbin, etc. -- are paid less than Pagano.

As mentioned earlier, Irsay has offered Pagano an extension and a modest raise. Pagano wants to prove that he is worth more and that's what brings us here. I doubt that there is turmoil within the organization, as the media is portraying. It's simply a matter of compensation, which will work itself out at the end of the year.

Let's clarify, the extension offered was for only one year. That's not exactly a ringing endorsement of the guy. Especially a coach with 36 wins under his belt.

That's true, it is for one year. With Pagano out for a year battling through cancer the Colts have only had 2 years to evaluate his coaching abilities. Ideally, Irsay would like an additional year of evaluations, which I think is reasonable. That extra year of evaluation also comes with a pay increase, so overall, it's not a bad deal.
What if the Colts let him and the GM walk and trade for Chip Kelly?

Or better yet, Jim Harbaugh returns to the NFL...

They can have Kelly. Harbaugh on the other hand...
Quote:Uhhh he's an average at best coach.

I don't see Pagano going anywhere, to be honest. He'll probably be extended at the end of next year (unless a complete fall off).

There's been too many times where teams just didn't show up for a game. At all. (Rams, Cardinals, Steelers, Patriots, Cowboys) to name a few games we were completely blown out in. Plus, "his" side of the ball (defense) has made no improvements.

I like him as a person, and I know the players love him too. But his coaching ability, to this point, has been average.

Gotta love the honesty from a Colts fan. I hope the Grigson (Irsay's golden boy)/Pagano team endures for years and years and squanders Luck's championship window. Serves the organization right for tanking for Luck.
