Telvin Smith (Round 5)

Luke Bowenko (Round 6)

Demetrius McCray (Round 7)

The past few years this would be accurate but this year and going forward its very possible a late round pick may not even make the team and that's something Caldwell mentioned not too long ago.
Naw man, don't over-think it. We know what Branch offers us- not much. We don't know what we could get from a late round pick.

I'm referring to this upcoming draft.

You are missing the point.
If I am an opposing offensive coordinator, no Leo on the roster (Clemons, Branch, Davis or Smith) gives me heartburn or causes me to keep the TE in or have the RB chip him on the way out.  All are backup grade guys currently, except for the aging Clemons who is not quite the same guy of yesterdays.  A young starting caliber Leo stud would be a welcome addition.

Be nice if we could get Bosa next year, but we would probably have to have a top 2 pick, which hopefully we are nowhere near.

Quote:Why? The coaching staff seems to like Branch.

Based on what?

Quote:Wash said Branch continued to develop last season before the groin injury. A second-round selection from Clemson in the 2012 NFL Draft, Branch registered three sacks in the first three games of the season. He had five sacks in the last seven games in 2013. “It (the light) came on a year ago, actually – just addressing some things we didn’t like, to be honest with you,” Wash said. “He addressed them. He does exactly what you ask him to do. He’s working out in California right now. We expect some real good things from him next year rushing the passer – and on first and second down.” …

Sounds like coach speak to me.

I like Branch. I just don't see him as part of the future plans for this team.

I thought the same. But then look at his comments about Alualu. Also the fact that he mentioned he'll be used on first and second downs tells me that they view him in pretty high regards.

Well for one thing, Bradley and his crew are the ones that invented the "OTTO" position. Do you ever get tired of saying stupid stuff?

Your posts are equally amusing. I question if you're even a fan of this team.

Maybe you should catch up with the rest of the crew:

Pretty much every coaching staff from high school and up have a version of the LEO or some other unorthodox position. Buck,Jack,Whip,Bandit, Tilt are all examples of such. Teams don't draft a LEO or an OTTO linebacker/end, they draft linebackers/ends that will sometimes play that role.

Its not really as huge of a deal as some make it out to be.

Talk about amusing.

Very true.

Virginia Tech runs a defense with single FS high, SS (rover) playing a lot near the line of scrimmage, and a "whip" OLB that isn't that much unlike our OTTO, where his responsibility could be many things.

What is important, though is that we get a true pass rusher at LEO, and we're not losing value having to take someone who more resembles a linebacker than RDE at #3.  If we're picking a "tweener" for that role, you can find one much later than #3.

Can you show where Gus Bradley and "his crew" invented this position you speak of?

They invented the term. The concept has been around in some variation or another.
