I like this idea
just lol @ downgrading our own player from the year previous colvin just because we signed some other dude that was a bench player

the practice should be wide open, that's the way gus bradley should run it.. before we even start he should declare that every spot on the team is completely up for grabs.

screw this "well he's gonna start and he is".. screw that earn your job, competition brings out the best.

I'm sure he'll sit if he doesn't play up to standards. But you don't pay someone $6.5M expecting him to be a backup.
Looks pretty decent, we are improved in every area we were lacking, and that's a good day. I would give Dave a B-, he got one big fish and has been aggressive with the checkbook. Can't say we were cheap this free agency.

Colvin played nickel last year. Staying there isn't a downgrade.

Word from O'Halloran is that someone in the Jags staff told him Gratz isn't an option at FS.

on #Jaguars free safety front, Caldwell last week told me moving Gratz from CB is not an option.

Quote:Why are you guys even acknowledging that site?

I've honestly never read it.

Thats what Im saying. I understand people like Colvin and want to see him start but "downgrade" im not seeing.
You need 4 decent corners these days. Nobody needs to change positions

There goes that

It's early free agency, let's keep it real. This your first rodeo?

the idea was that he was gonna be starting, that's why I said what I did

but I also do agree that paying someone 6 million to sit on the bench isn't ideal either

I just think you have to find a happy medium somewhere because time and time again you see someone given the job and his money and he busts because his incentive is gone and the pressure is on at the same time

Quote:Wonder if someone is getting converted to FS, Gratz possibly?
Possible. As much as the team bangs the drum for Colvin at corner, I have to wonder if Colvin's the guy who ends up at safety. Gratz is viewed by the team as a nickel guy, and as much as he regressed, I still can't see them shuffling him into dime sets and leaving him to rot on special teams. McCray and House on the outside with Colvin and Cyp at safety would put the team's four best backs on the field at the same time, and it's not like there are any free safety prospects better than Colvin out there at this point anyway.

If that's true, you have to wonder if he's even in their plans going forward. Ideally you'd want your 4th CB playing special teams and I'm not sure Gratz has much value playing ST.

I've thrown the idea out that Colvin could move to FS he played some safety at Oklahoma.

Started at strong safety for an entire season. He knows how to play the deep third. Only question I'd have about Colvin to safety is whether he's big enough. Jags list him at 6'0" 186, Ourlads at 5'11" 177. Earl Thomas weighs 200 and looks thicker and better-built than Colvin.
I think House will prove to be a good addition for us, if he stays healthy. Has shown he can play some solid coverage in spot duty, and is not afraid to hit. Now, can he do it consistently, as a full-time starter? Time will tell, but if so then the $$ will have been well spent. GB wanted to keep him, but not at these prices.

Relatively young, has some upside. Beyond getting the chance to start, and the larger paycheck, apparently the opportunity to reunite here in JAX with his old college coach - DeWayne Walker - helped swing the deal too.

As a Packers fan, I'm sorry to see him go. As a Jags fan, I'm very happy with this pick-up.

O'Halloran shot that one down too. (he's been wrong of course)

Yea, As long as the best guys are on the field no matter the pay im good.
Could Cyprien play FS? If so, maybe we are better off trying to find a SS.
