What are your NFL projections for DT-DE Mario Edwards Jr?

What do you think Edwards' best position in the NFL will be?

What facets of his game do you feel he needs to improve on to reach his potential?

What spot ( Round ) do you see Edwards being selected?

I think he is a good player. Number one recruit in the nation I believe but never really lived up to it. Still would be a good pick up. He has great size for a 3 4 DE or three tech. Anxious to see what he can do at the nfl level.

Thanks for your input.

One of the related questions to what I brought up in the opening post of the thread is why didn't Mario Edwards Jr. live up to his potential with the ' Noles?   On the surface,  it seems like he probably would have greatly benefited if he stayed with FSU for his Senior Season.

It's really hard to say. When i watched him play i was impressed. People said work ethic, weight gain, etc... he played great though in the national championship game.

One thing I read in the last couple of hours about Mario Edwards Jr.  is he got his weight all the way down to 276 during this past season.   Edwards weighted 279 at the Combine.   If Edwards is asked to be primarily a 3 Technique DT in the NFL,  I'm wondering what would be around the maximum weight he needs to be at to hold up well enough against the run and be effective as a pass rusher with the necessary NFL level development?   It would seem likely that as a 3 Technique that's more than a situational pass rusher,  he will have to gain at least some additional weight back.
I didnt realize he was that light. I thought he was around 295. At 275 i think he could be an effective 4 3 de

There is a difference between maximum and optimal. How much did he weigh during his best season?

According to the following article,  Mario Edwards Jr. weighted over 300 pounds early in the season and got down to 276 over the course of the season.   That's quite a drop:

Agreed.   Yet,  maximum weight level limits are necessary as the point a player can't afford to exceed.

As for your 2nd question,   Mario Edwards Jr.  was a starter for 2 seasons.    I'm not sure which of the two seasons was his best season.    Especially,  when you break down his game into various categories.   Unless one sees a large portion of a player's games AND focuses in on a player,   it can be difficult to gauge his level of play.   Those who follow Florida St. very closely are much better equipped than I am to make an in-depth insightful assessment of Edwards'  play.

That's amazing. It would be nice if all overweight people were able to lose 25 pounds in a short time, not just some football players.

So let's say start him at defensive end, then move him to defensive tackle if he gains most or all that weight back.

The weight loss by Mario Edwards Jr. in a relatively quick period of time has similarities to Nick Fairley losing a large amount of weight in a similar time interval this past season.

I'm anticipating that the team that drafts Edwards will have a specific plan for him,  in terms of the position ( s ) he plays and what weight range they will want him to be at.

25 pounds is less than 10% of his body weight. Normal people can lose that in three months by relatively small changes to their diet, much less the physical exertion that football players experience during a season. Heck, you could add five 8oz glasses of water to your day and that would probably be enough to lose the 10% over that time frame.
overrated

Edwards can be a beast if he goes somewhere where they can unleash his potential.

He can dominate like he did against Auburn in the National Championship game.

I also remember him having something like 4 sacks in one half in one game, but then he goes 4-5 games without a sack.

To me, he was just a little too big to be the traditional pass-rushing DE.  FSU also has had some injuries on their D-line and had Mario playing everywhere.

I think he's a 2nd round pick.

It's possible that playing many different roles might have slowed Mario Edwards Jr's development.   It's another reason why he probably would have been better off coming back for his Senior Season.   The fact that Edwards isn't even 21 yet demonstrates that he might have had too much on his plate.   Edwards seems like one of those players who is more difficult to project the outcome of his NFL career,  compared to most players.   He might be the type who could make or break a draft for the team that selects him.
Eh, He was a disappointment at FSU.

The problem for people who don't exercise as much as he does is trying to keep the extra pounds off. And at the end of the day, Mario Edwards is a normal person too.
He's quite the athlete.  Apparently, he can do a standing back-flip wearing full pads.

Having said that, I'm a Nole fan and I hope we do not draft him.

David,

Mario Edwards is an interesting prospect. FSU fans saw flashes of what could have been, but he was very inconsistent throughout his career. His best game was probably the national championship game against Auburn. He and  last year's second overall pick Greg Robinson battled all night. The link below shows every snap of him against Auburn. The play at the 8:45 mark shows off his athleticism really well and shows what he could be capable of.

I think he is better suited in the NFL as a 3-4 end or moving inside in a 4-3. I don't think he can be a dominant pass rusher based off of what I saw in his time at FSU. The one other issues that you and others in this thread alluded to is the weight. Twice in his three years at FSU he got up to 300+ lbs and had to drop weight.

All in all, I think he is a middle/late second round to third round prospect.

Matt,  thanks for your insight and the video link.

The play you highlighted late in the video certainly is a very impressive display of athletic ability.   Not to mention a good read by Mario Edwards Jr.

There was another play earlier in the video in which Edwards ended up with a sack that illustrated his natural skills as well.

Another thing that caught my attention is Edwards drew a holding penalty by Greg Robinson on a passing play.

While it looks like Edwards has a long way to go in his development,  it's easy to see why he probably will be drafted in the range of the draft that you mentioned.
