I would be surprised if he gets more than that.  His agent may have overshot this one.

Look at who the Bills just got via trade. They wanted to move on from C.J. Spiller. when he hits free agency.

His agent did him a disservice based on what veteran RBs are getting in free agency right now.  It's amazing how quickly the position has devalued.

I dont think he wanted to play in Buffalo anymore. I mean, they do have Matt Cassel. SMH.

I can see someone giving him 4 million. Still, with the way the position has devalued, taking the 4.5 would have been the smart thing to do. Why would he think he'd get more than that in FA unless he just wanted out of Buffalo?

It's hard to sign a, when the season starts, 28 year old RB, although very good in my opinion, to a lengthy expensive or guaranteed contract.  If CJ was offered $4.5m, he should have taken it to stay where he is loved and his legacy exists.  At best, I think the market may pay him $5m average, but little, if any, beyond the first year will be guaranteed to allow the acquiring team to axe him as father time catches another one.

You answered your own question. Why would he want to stay in Buffalo as LeSean McCoy's backup?

I actually sat next to him on a flight from Atlanta to Jax.  Really nice guy...I was hoping we'd sign him just because he's a hometown kid and a really good person.  

 

Hoping a change of scenery would help give him a few pretty good years.

Awesome! Did you tell him Gene Smith wanted to pick him if the Bills didn't even though we already had a good running back?

He told me he told the Jags they had to make a trade to move up because the Bills were going to take him.

 

I would have rather had CJ Spiller than Tyson at this point....but we missed out on some really good picks taken shortly after both of them.

Right now it would be better to have Spiller than Alualu, but back then defensive tackle was a bigger need than running back.

It doesn't matter when you take that big of a reach though.  Earl Thomas, JPP, Mike Iupati, Maurkice Pouncey....holy cow.

 

I'm not a huge hindsight guy, but that was a horrible pick.

I think the fact that the team did not get a top flight player in that draft is what really started the downward spiral of the Gene Smith era. Gabbert busting certainly didn't help but the fact that the team has a "solid rotational" player at DT instead of  one of those guys that you state above was just crippling.

I did not say it was a good pick. I just think it also would have been stupid to trade up for a running back. My pick would have been JPP.

Ehh, at the time JPP was an enigma and nobody really knew if he'd be any good.  He played one year of college football and he was drafted off of one season.  It was a risky pick that a team like the Giants at the time could take.

Hindsight is 20/20. Every time I see JPP play I wish we picked him.

 

Back to the topic, where did this idea come from that the Bills offered C.J. Spiller a contract? They wanted to get rid of him.
