Kane and others,

Please forgive me for not quoting and pasting.  I am on a different computer than my own and cannot change the browser from IE.

We DO have an idea.  I posted a link on the NFL at large board in a McCourty thread.  A New Jersey paper said it was believed the Jaguars offered more money, and there have been several reports indicating McCourty was surprised at the strength of the Jaguars' offer and was almost ready to leave until the Pats upped their offer.

It is clear we aren't going to land the motherload in FA. Going by the rumors, it will be a good, respectable class but not one that will tip a bunch of games our way. We are still building the foundation and I think it is evident we need another year of rebuilding to get where we want to go.

I think landing Thomas is the key to free agency.

Up the offer a little if necessary.

We have to get Bortles all the tools needed for him to prosper.

Yes, it's simply not the case that players will take the most money. I hear people like Fat Tony et al on 1010 espouse this notion all the time. It's just not the case, we see it time and time again. The two biggest names besides Suh both took lesser deals to play for who they want to play for. You can't get to this level without a strong sense of pride in what you do--otherwise they wouldn't have the confidence in themselves to succeed. So it makes sense to me when a prideful player chooses to play for who they want rather than the money. They want to the best. They want to be champions. They aren't all chasing that dollar sign; they are all millionaires already anyway.
What happened to all those players who wanted to play for Gus?

Trying to sound like TMD?
So far.... I think the FA group is coming along.

now a strong draft class and the team should improve a lot for 2015.

Even with missing out on McCourty...I think with Thomas...this can be a very good FA class for the Jaguars.

I am beginning to think that by the end of the week, we will be a stronger, more competitive team.

We got a top 10 FA in Julius, another top 20 in Odrick, another top 50 (or much higher in some places) in Parnell, and a highly sought after undervalued FA in Skuta. Those four alone would be a very solid and realistic FA haul.

However, on top of that we are also strong contenders and possibly even frontrunners for another top 10 and top 50 FA in Murray and House. This is in addition to probably a few other off radar guys like Skuta. If that disappoints you then you have problems.

What FA has revealed so far is that the JAGS:

Have been very active in FA

Signed a SPLASH TE.

Went after Cobb and McCourty.

Signed young, youngish players who look to work well with the system.

Payed what it took, even if those who hollered fire Dave if a penny is left

are now remorseful that we have overpayed, fans gonna fan.

Are still in the hunt for additional players.

It is not over yet.

Just look at Cobb, who was hotly rumored to be a target for us. Took $2M less to stay in GB compared to what Maclin got in KC. And oh btw, Maclin was reuniting with his former HC too.

Different players have different priorities.

People have been listening to Prisco too much. Not everybody is all about the money.

Some players prefer a degree of familiarity and comfort when deciding where to sign.

But no Suh! or Jake Long!

Isn't a good measure of our standing to compare free agents we were targeting that did not sign with their old team? I do not view FAs signing with their current team as true losses, as many times there are emotional or personal factors that add weight against money or title contention variables.

Excluding that group of players gives a feel for rankings within our own peer group, and I think we're well ahead of other teams in similar situations. That may be a good sign.
This has been mentioned a few times on twitter and I believe I've seen it posted on the board too, but the biggest thing this FA period has revealed to me is that Khan et al. are transforming Jax into a place that players want to come to.

The word is out.
Reading and listening to the pundits, the general opinion is tha the Jags are overpaying for promising, but unproven talent. In other words, they're taking a big risk. With these FA's and the 2015 draft class, it will determine current management's ability to identify and attract talent. If half or more of these new players bomb, we'll be looking at a new head coach in 2016, and another rebuilding episode. Bottom line.....can our current management identify and sign high quality, talented players. We're obviously paying premium prices, so if they bomb, we'll have a ton of dead money on the books over the next 5 years.

Depends on how they structure the contracts. That's where the hiring of Idzik comes in.
An hour to go... hopefully soon we'll be starting to see actual signings rather than speculation...

The ones coming to town, and others we're talking to?

Pretty funny the folks who prematurely suggested otherwise.
