Its pretty safe to say that none of us want to spend all the money we have on FA. So that being said how much do you want left over for future years?
Depends on who our free agents are next year. I think Andre is a free agent and I'm not sure who else
Maximum: 25 million
Minimum: 15 million
Enough left to where we still have a little bit of cushion for future years, and enough gone to indicate that we were a pretty active team and should expect drastic improvement.
Enough to show that we did make a splash and can still stay in good terms for the future
Some left to rollover next year. Between 25-30 million.
I want 1-2 big names and a few small "prove it" deals like Marks initially got. So wherever that leaves us.
Remember the stipulation that the Jaguars must spend a certain percentage of their cap over three years. Caldwell pointed out that there's no dire need to reach any number this year, but you still have to think about how this year is part of the three years.
Just was thinking because some people have 4 huge names FA so just wanted to see how this relates to that
Would love to see them pay the upfront/guaranteed load of the deals in the form of roster bonuses, whereby the player gets his desired guaranteed dollars upfront and the team does not amortize the upfront bonus into future cap years. The Jags are in a rare place financially to be able to do this. It will chew up more cap this year, but will save cap space in future seasons.

It's not a simple question. We have to spend enough to meet the minimum 4-year spending requirements by 2016, but we have to be able to sign our top young players to extensions. Based on the young players we have, and when they were drafted, some will need extensions in 2016, and a lot more in 2017.

What happens if we don't spend enough to meet the minimum? Probably just a small fine if I had to guess

If we don't spend enough to meet the minimum, the deficit has to be paid out to the players on the roster.

That's not bad. Thanks.
I read that the cap is increasing significantly next year. As a result, a lot of teams will be better able to retain their top players. As a result, this is the season to make a bang in free agency.
Personally, I don't care if we have a single dime left after free agency as long as the contracts are structured properly and allow for a lot of cap space in 3 years in the event we need to lock Bortles up long term.
IT'S NOT ABOUT CAP SPACE. IT'S MORE ABOUT THEY WAY CONTRACTS ARE STRUCTURED !!!
I would like to the Jags sign at least three Big Free Agents for around 31 to 33 Mil then sign additional 3 lesser Free Agents for around 10 Mil.
If the Jags spend 41 to 43 Mil out of 68 Mil available, that would be sweet.

I would consider it very bad, because basically, we would have blown our unused cap space on nothing. Great for the players on the roster, they would receive an across the board bonus, but in terms of roster and cap management, we would have spent a bunch of money for absolutely nothing.
I actually asked what the minimum cap dollars the Jaguars would have to spend in another thread, and ended up finding the answer. The Jaguars have this year and next year to catch up to the minimum spending amount due to the collective bargaining agreement.
Quote:After two years of the minimum spend period, the Raiders are at 80.19 percent of the 2011 and 2012 caps. The Jaguars are at 82.19 percent. Currently, the Jaguars are $66.8 million under the cap for 2015. The Raiders will be at $56.5 million under once the termination of safety Tyvon Branch's contract becomes official.
Quote:The stage is set for the Jaguars and Raiders to spend, spend, spend. Currently, the Raiders' cash payroll is at $78.7 million and the Jaguars' is at $86.4 million. Each team needs to spend $50 million to $65 million of additional cash to catch up to the rest of the league, which should make free agency fascinating.

we have about 68 million. So its safe to say 8 million for the rookie pool. That leaves us with approx. 60 million. I would release Lewis and clear up about 7 million so we could sign a top TE or maybe top tight end and one average TE. That being said we now have about 67 million. I would then want us to at least spend 40 million leaving us with 27 million to carry to the next season. 40 million would include TE, OL, Suh, and McCourty. I don't think thats too bad.

Just as long as you know there are 31 other teams out there also bidding on these guys. It's not like we go to the grocery store and get a Suh off the Suh shelf and a McCourty off the McCourty shelf.
