He was not franchise tagged today. That makes it seem like he could hit free agency if the Patriots don't sign him by Mar 10th. If he hits the market we have to jump the boat and offer him a contract right away. If Dave Caldwell has a deal in place for him what would be your guess?
I'm guessing 4 years 40 million with 25 guaranteed?
The catch with McCourty is that I think he genuinely wants to return to the Patriots, so Caldwell will have to blow him away. I think your contract may be pretty close due to the 25 guaranteed.
Im scared we wont have a chance at him considering he wants to stay a pat

Here's the question that jumps out for me that I don't know if there's a tangible answer at this time:
Based on the Patriots adversely salary cap situation, can they afford to re-sign Devin McCourty AND retain Darrelle Revis?

I feel as if the Pats will some how find a way to do so.

I read somewhere that Revis and the kicker was more important to them then McCourty. That doesn't mean he won't re sign there, if he hits the market the Colts will be a team that might go after him and I would rather want him here.
He'll be an upgrade in the secondary but I too reserve the thought of him becoming a Jaguar...
NH3...

Only if they can sign Revis to a team friendly contract structure. I'm not sure that will happen though. Common sense would tell you though that if it comes down to either/or, then you go with the elite CB.
I'm a bit worried, because I have heard numerous analysts today say that McCourty is good. However, no way in hell is he worth 10 million a year or worth the kind of guaranteed money he's going to command. I like him.

Jarius Byrd got that last year and I'm willing to argue he's as good, if not better than him and younger without the injury baggage.

They have done it before but this time around there doesn't seem like much margin of error for it to happen.

Looking at the Jaguars situation from a distance, my take is if the Jaguars want a player enough and he hits the open market, they have a great chance of succeeding if the team brass is willing to pay the price. The amount of salary cap space the Jags already have, not even factoring in the possibility of freeing up more cap space, is off the charts. The Colts have a very good cap situation as well. But it doesn't compare to the Jags cap situation.

Being that Darrelle Revis won a Super Bowl, it's realistically possible that the money factor will be the overriding factor in his decision if the Patriots insist on a restructured contract.
Normally, the elite CB would be the preference over a high caliber Safety. Yet, in this case, Revis is over two years older than Devin McCourty. How much, if at all, that will be part of the Patriots decision making process if it becomes an either or situation?

Caldwell's words verbatim:
"I think if there was a big-time player there that we have a need for we’ll be aggressive for it."

Playing devils advocate, even if Devin McCourty doesn't live up to the terms of a contract he might sign with the Jaguars, if the team structures the contract in a way that focuses mostly on a high amount of cap space used in the 1st and 2nd years of the contract, I don't think the contract will hurt the Jaguars that much if the team decides to move on after two seasons. With most teams, it would be a greater concern. But we are talking about a team with $ 68 million + in cap space already,

This should be the approach.
Consider the sacrifices the Jaguars made to get to this point, including 2 very long seasons since Dave Caldwell and Gus Bradley came on board, why not be aggressive if you are in their position.
One thing I strongly believe is that Shad Khan is tired of losing and wants tangible results in 2015. He can certainly afford to open up his wallet. The type of money he would be spending would be peanuts, compared to his overall personal fortune.

We could arguably use ALL of the 'big-time' players going on the market: the list includes Suh, McCourty, Julius Thomas, Bulaga and Cobb. I think McCourty should be target #1. But also get Bulaga and maybe Thomas. I can't guess at what Caldwell thinks of Suh. He's a wildcard for me. I def want McCourty the most if I'm Caldwell tho; he will be the largest upgrade you can make.

Adam Scheftner bought up this same question.
<a class="bbc_url" href='http://nesn.com/2015/03/adam-schefter-darrelle-revis-will-hit-free-agency-if-patriots-dont-pick-up-option/'>http://nesn.com/2015/03/adam-schefter-darrelle-revis-will-hit-free-agency-if-patriots-dont-pick-up-option/</a>
Revis currently is technically under contract with a 20 mil option assuming the Pats don't do any type of restructure. With that said and their current cap predicament I fully expect either:
They re-sign Revis to a new extension with a lower cap number to get them out of the red.
Or
They cut Revis outright and get out of the red.
Either option is available and in order to be in compliance with cap rules
WILL be executed before March 10th. The first option will leave them with little margin for error in re-signing McCourty and other FAs they may covet.
The second option could end up being the most likely scenario but would leave you potentially losing both Revis and McCourty to the highest bidder on the open market...assuming McCourty wants to hear what options he has before putting pen to paper.
Its certainly a dilemma.
Is anyone not surprised Devin McCourty wasn't tagged? It seemed like everybody was expecting a defensive back to get it, not the kicker.
If he hits the open market he'll get more than 10 mil AAV.
