I was wondering if the Jags ever franchised a player in their history.

 

Nobody comes to mind, but I really don't remember if we ever had one.

Josh Scobee was the last one.

Donovin Darius being Franchised for three consecutive seasons back in the Del Rio - Harris era was the spot of much contention and some pretty nasty back and forth between the two sides. I believe that it was in the 2004 to 2008 timeframe maybe?

There may have been others, but we actually franchised Donovan Darius three years in a row. 

The ironic part of that is that at the beginning of those three years, he really wanted a multi-year extension for the sake of security, and the team didn't want to do it.

However, after three times being franchised, and that number rising substantially each year, he ended up making more than he was looking for at the beginning of that period. 

Once we start having star players again we will see us using it again

So we never really franchised a real superstar NFL player in 20 years?

Fred Taylor and Jones-Drew were superstars in a lot of NFL circles

MJD already filled that role.  He was probably the first player who garnered national attention.

Yeah, I know they were superstar players for the Jags.

 

I am just wondering who the first superstar type player that the Jags will have to franchise, will be?

 

They have not had to put the franchise tag on a real superstar player yet.

I'm not sure why it has to be a superstar they're franchising.  That's not really what the tag is about.  As has already been pointed out, the team has had legitimate superstar talent on the roster.  Just because they didn't franchise tag them doesn't mean they weren't in that sphere.

Probably someone from our 2014 draft class. Maybe 2013 depending on how well they pan out.

I do consider Donovin Darius to be a real superstar player. There are several elite SS in league history like Atwater, Lott, Lynch, Tatum and Polumalu to name a few, but Darius in my book was the best versus the run. He had his issues in coverage, but the man was a true playmaker and one of the best run stuffers the game has ever known.

Man Brackens was an exciting player to watch for like a two year span.  I think injuries just caught up with him.

Living in NY at the time I remember Fred Taylor being recognized as a superstar.  Jimmy Smith as well.

Was Tony Brackens the first to get it? I remember he was the first veteran to hold out in a contract dispute in team history after getting the franchise tag.
