Reading this and looking back it really did seem like all the talk before the season ended up being for not and the Jaguars did pretty much abandon the OTTO position out of necessity when they realized no one could really fill the role. Reverting back to the traditional SAM backer wasn't a huge difference, but I think they'd like to have a more dynamic guy in that role.

Hopefully they can get a guy like Worilds in here who will have a big impact. That's a big hole on our defense that I think is worth discussing, especially with Hayes and Thomas set to be FAs.

Nice article, kind of confirms what I was pretty sure I saw later in the year, as the OTTO became the notto. I love the idea of Worilds lining up there, but if they don't get him, I'd hope they wait until the second round or later to grab an OTTO.

Unless, of course, they think that Randy Gregory could fill the role...

Good article, but it opened up another question. That screen capture in the article shows Geno Hayes lined up near the LOS essentially as the more traditional SAM. There are two other LB's on the field (appears to be JT in the middle and Telvin on the weaksde) and Cyp is up in the box as well. So my question is this: What does the defensive front 7 look like when there is both a LEO and OTTO on the field? Is it essentially a variation of a 3-4, with the LEO lined up outisde, and Telvin lined up just to the left of the LEO? What does Telvin's role become when there are four LB's on the field?

Fixed that for ya!
No surprise. How'd that OW position do?

Nah, that's just a situation where Cyprien happened to be up in the box. The OTTO is one of the 3 linebackers with the Will and Mike. So your front 7 would be the same as it usually would be with a Sam, except instead of the Sam it's an OTTO. The OTTO completely replaces the Sam linebacker. Telvin Smith is the weak side (will) linebacker regardless of the OTTO's position on the LOS.

It would look something like this (with the OTTO having the freedom to switch to either side of the LOS):

OTTO - (5 tech) - (1 tech) - (3 tech) - (LEO)

                               Mike - Will

              SS

                                              FS

So what does an OTTO do that a strong side linebacker doesn't?

Basically, why is there a special term for it?

Edit: never mind. Read the article lol
Would love it if we could get Jason Worlids.  One less spot we would have to fill, and Worlids would be a perfect fit

If we dont get a Worlids, and Leonard Williams is our pick in the 1st, Lorenzo Mauldin in one of the mid rounds is the guy I want at OTTO

Ok, so it's basically a 5-2-2 (but as the article says, the OTTO has the scheme versatility to move around)?

Here's a link where Pete Carroll discusses his 4-3 Under Defense while at a Nike Coaches' Clinic. It's the first article down the page. In that speech, Carroll describes the play of each person on the field. It may look like a 52, but it's really a 4-3 with the SAM doing what I call "Playing Monster" on the Tight End.

OTTO isn't worth spending a #3 pick to fill.

A player who can rush the passer and have the versatility to drop back in coverage isn't worth the #3 spot? I highly disagree. The problem is finding that player who can do both, and equally well.

If Gregory can play OTTO on first and second down and LEO on third, I'd argue he's worth the pick.
Shaq Thompson in Round #2 please
2. The Otto discussion is living in the gray area. Narrowing it down, Gus wants a LB who can, in order, a) cover, b ) play run and c) rush.........according to Ryan O'Halloran

Agree... only if that player turns out to be a Hall of Famer.

Worth the risk?

I'm not so sure with this tweener crop.

That's a very high standard for any crop. I'd love to bring Derrick Thomas to the table as the type of player I'd envision taking for a dual-role OTTO/LEO at three...but he was a Hall of Famer and drafted fourth. Not exactly helping my argument.

I'll put it like this: if Randy Gregory rotates between OTTO and LEO and is a disruptive ten-sack guy for the next ten years, he's probably not a Hall of Famer, but he's not a pick I'd be whining about in 2025 either.

The high standard comes with selecting a position like tweener/rush OLB at pick #3.

They just aren't picked there often.  The ones that are, are HOFers (Lawrence Taylor at #2.)

The point is, IMO - if you can move out, you better if you're left selecting from tweener rushers.  You're likely to get a similar caliber guy (perhaps even one that's a better fit even if not at the same position) even after trading down.

This is the danger in a reach.  There's no better example of reaching, than if we'd go with one of these OLBs with #3, IMO.  In the very best case... you've lost value in the pick even if the player is productive.  If you trade out, it's more likely that not only do you get the right value for the picks, you'll also likely to have several players you're happy with instead of one.
Would Clay Matthews be a great OTTO? Im trying to picture other players except Bruce Irving from the Seahawks.
