So in looking at the current Defense, I think it's safe to say that depth needs to be added to the ILB corps. By that, I mean the MIKE 'backer and the SAM who is referred to as the OTTO in the current Defense. However, this doesn't seem to be all that deep of a draft for the position so it prompted me to go afield in order to find prospects. Also, it's more fun to project than to just pick names off of a list. Let me lay out the structure that I was working with:

<p style="margin-left:40px;">The idea that the team will not use a Weekday(night) pick on this position as I feel like there are greater needs elsewhere on the roster, but rather spend a Fourth or later Round selection on the position.

<p style="margin-left:40px;">

<p style="margin-left:40px;">The player(s) will not be required to start immediately, but can be "Core Four" Special teams guys, LBs like doing Special Teams stuff anyways. Due to this, undersized guys that may need to add bulk are considered.

<p style="margin-left:40px;">

<p style="margin-left:40px;">Due to the pass rush via blitz nature of the OTTO spot, special consideration was given to smaller DEs that may have pass rush skills but not necessarily the frame to play on the Line in the NFL. Yes, I understand that the LEO spot allows for undersized players, but the players in this thread will be considered as LBs first.

<p style="margin-left:40px;">

<p style="margin-left:40px;">The player must have a stout enough build to be able to stack either a Tight End or pulling Offensive Lineman in order to support the run defense. As arbitrary numbers I want the player to be 6' 3" or greater and weigh more than 240 lbs, but those values are not set in stone by any means.

<p style="margin-left:40px;">

<p style="margin-left:40px;">Pass defense is not a primary consideration as the Tight End can be passed off to the SS but zone drops into flats are key. The point here is that the player needs to be athletic enough to drop but not to necessarily cover Jimmy Graham all over the field.

All of that being said, I present these prospects. Anything that you have to add on the players is appreciated and please feel free to add your own players that you feel will fit the role. Oh, and always, feel free to throw insults, vitriol, snide remarks, and comments about mother as you see fit.

Note that the MockDraftable profile is relative to other players at the position that they were registered in, so it may not be a great fit, but I like the site so I'm including it anyways.

Zack Hodges - CBSSports.com draft profile - MockDraftable profile

Davis Tull - NFL.com draft profile - MockDraftable profile

Zack Wagenmann - NFL.com draft measureables - MockDraftable profile

I like Hodges, i like his pass rush ability and i think he's athletic enough to drop in coverage and he has 34" arms which definitely doesn't hurt
I like Davis Tull as an option at OTTO.

Hodges will sell you on his length, his passion for the game (see his approach to the Combine drills), and his work ethic. What will hold you back is his level of competition, his athleticism, and how he looks to be "light" even though he measured in at 250#s.

I think he'd be in a great situation if he could come in, train up on LB skills all season long, contribute to Special Teams, and grow as much as he can as a football player for his first season. I'm not certain that the team can provide that for him, but I do like the idea.

He's the one guy that I was hoping to learn more about via this thread. I've read up on him a bit but I want to know more. I like him as well and feel like he might be available really really late in the draft.

Here's how his MockDraftable profile relates to other ILBs for this class:

I think he'll be gone long before the end of the draft. Check out this highlight video (yes, I know it's a couple years old).

I could almost see him as a LEO candidate with a motor and moves like that. A move to OTTO might take him a little while to adjust to, but he's got a lot of potential to be dominant there. Enough so that I think he presents the team with a bit of a quandary. The Jags' third-round pick might be a little high to take him, but there's a decent chance a 3-4 team snatches him up later in that round and he's not there in four. He's a guy we might have to trade down/up for.

A few thoughts that I have about that cut up:

<p style="margin-left:40px;">1. He was abusing the majority of Right Tackles that he went up against. Granted, it's a highlight reel so you expect that kind of thing but it just seemed like no one could keep their hands on him during a block.

<p style="margin-left:40px;">

<p style="margin-left:40px;">2. Big time motor on the guy. He ran down a few plays down the field and that's always something that I like to see, especially from a Defensive Lineman.

<p style="margin-left:40px;">

<p style="margin-left:40px;">3. You better cut him if you're running away from him. He got to the RB a few times coming from the backside of the play.

<p style="margin-left:40px;">

<p style="margin-left:40px;">4. Do not like how he reacted to the cut block. When he jumped to clear the block, he just seemed out of control. Almost like he was trying to leap all the way to the Quarterback.

A little more "realistic" cut there since it seemed to be just about every play from the game. You can see where he was working against the RT and won a few matches. I like how he was smart enough to "slow play" versus a read option but still be able to explode towards the play once it developed.

Really an intriguing guy.
Does anyone know why he didn't run the 40? He absolutely destroyed the vert and broad jump.
Repetitive post.

I just found this <a class="bbc_url" href='http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/2015-nfl-combine-notebook-part-iii/' title="External link">excerpt</a> from the NFP. Granted, it's Greg Gabriel and he is someone who I don't always agree with, but he puts a Fourth round grade on Tull with the possibility to move to a Third. He explains that his lack of participation was due to an injury. Excerpt follows:

<p style="margin-left:40px;">"...

<p style="margin-left:40px;">Davis Tull – Tennessee – Chattanooga

<p style="margin-left:40px;">

<p style="margin-left:40px;">Going into the Combine, not many from the media and even in the draftnik community knew much about Tull.  I did my film work on him about a week ago, and he totally dominated FCS competition. I put a fourth round grade on him. After yesterday, that grade just may have to go up. Because of an injury, Tull didn’t do a lot but what he did do was remarkable. He measured 6020 -246 and his jumps were 42.5 in the vertical and 11′ in the long jump. You can bet there will be quite a crowd at Tull’s pro day! With that explosiveness, he could move up to the third round

I guess the guy that would seem to fit the bill for me isn't listed-Bernardrick McKinney.

He could play inside or out.

He has the length and athleticism to play the OTTO.

He is big enough to hold the point of attack, and long enough arms to fend off blockers.

Were he available in the 2nd round, or we somehow to make a reasonable trade up into the bottom of the first to get him, I would be very happy with him.

With the caveat of a 4th round or lower pick, I'd consider the Grissom from Oklahoma (an OLB) and Xzavier Dickson out of Alabama who could be mid round picks.

I would think about adding Stephone Anthony to the list. He is supposed to be an ILB, but his speed and skill set might allow him to become an OLB and perform as an Otto.
Otto is outside, will I'd inside
Quote:Does anyone know why he didn't run the 40? He absolutely destroyed the vert and broad jump.

That post looks like you are asking about defensive back Byron Jones, not a linebacker prospect. Jones was the guy who destroyed both jump drills and did not run 40 yards.

Tull finished first out of all LINEBACKERS in the vertical leap and second in the broad jump.

Ah, you're right. I was flawed in how I saw this Defense, and the specific positions, align. Thanks for the clarification.
Kwon Alexander ? He seems to have the versatility they want in this OTTO position.

And this write-up compares him to the man they wanted to fill the slot last year...
