There were several surprises from the combine which should significantly change the draft stock of potential Jaguars. The following players should be impacted:

1. Maxx Williams- Good chance he may fall to the Jags after disappointing run.

2. Denzell Perryman and Paul Dawson- These guys were supposed to go high 2nd before the combine. Slow 40 time may drop one or both to the 3rd round.

3. Dante Fowler- Stock is at it's highest, If Williams goes 2nd, this is likely to be our pick barring a trade down.

4. Vic Beasley- Very good measureables at combine, but he disappeared in many games for Clemson.

5. Rashad Greene- Looked really good and would be a steal in the 3rd round if we don't get Randall Cobb.

6. Jake Fisher- May have moved to the first round.

I was most disappointed in the 2 linebackers since the Jaguars would have likely targeted one in the 2nd round. However, either would be a steal in the 3rd. What do you think about this post-combine draft scenario:

Round 1: Dante Fowler (afraid Williams is gone and no great trade offers)

            2. Jake Fisher- Perfect zone blocking right tackle

            3. Perryman or Dawson or Rashad Greene if both linebackers are gone

            4. Best running back available (Cobb is a good option due to mediocre 40 time)

5-7  Most impressive guys they coached at the combine.

Stephone Anthony in the 3rd would also be a good pick IMO, provided he's there of course
One of the things that stuck out the most to me was how weak the tight end group was as a whole. Maxx Williams might actually slip to our second rd pick now. Also I hope the love affair of Nick O'leary on this board comes to a halt. I sometimes saw people on here mocking him to us in the third round. Just ridiculous.
Good Notes. Fowler, Fisher, Dawson. Julius+Suh would be a dream.

My thoughts on the combine are that some people completely overvalue the significance of timed sprint.

I think the Nick O'Leary love affair was solely based on the school he went to because this board is full of Seminoles fans. People who knew the truth about him did say he is overrated.

Clive Walford also was slower than expected. We coached him at the Senior Bowl, so that will not hurt him if he is available at #36.
Some players who helped or hurt their draft stock at the combine:

Hogwash. Oleary is a player. A damn good one.
That Funchess dude is the one
Rumor has it that the Packers may target Stephen Anthony - ILB - Clemson with their Rd 2 pick.

How did Williams hurt his stock?

Definitely every year a 6th-7th round guy runs fast and all of a sudden he should be a 2nd-3rd round pick
I think that combine performances only make a difference if they are significantly worse/better than expected.

For instance, Maxx Williams appeared a little slow, compared to some of the scorching performances from the wide receivers.  But, I don't think anyone expected him to be be a speed-merchant.  I think his game is about making catches.  And he will go in the first round - because he is the best of a bad group of Tight Ends.  And someone will be desperate for a Tight End.

The same with David Cobb - his time was slow, but we weren't expecting him to be fast, like Abdullah, Coleman or Johnson.

It's when something unexpected happens (like Bridgewater's pro day) that NFL scouts start to sit up and change their opinions.

I think Beasley is an example of a player this year who performed better than expected and he might get extra attention as a result.

But slow times don't necessarily spell disaster for a player.  If someone like Dawson or Perryman can convince scouts that they can produce performances on the field, maybe their combine 40 times aren't all that crucial.  (although their rivals Kendricks and McKinney produced pretty good times...)

every year its the same thing.  people never learn that its borderline meaningless

Maxx Williams? Slower than expected 40 time.

you expected under a 4.5 but everyone else knew that wasn't going to happen

Was it ? I don't think anyone was expecting him to be quick ?

last week she was saying if he didn't run under a 4.5 it would be disappointing
40 times arent overrated unless you make them so.  They are just one of many data points to consider.

Take a guy like Maxx Williams.  That is a disappointing time for him.  You are drafting him to be a pass catching TE.  He isnt considered to be a great blocker... just sufficient.  So you are potentially taking him in the 1st round thinking he is a difference maker as a pass catching TE.  Well now we see he isnt very fast.  So you are potentially taking him in the 1st round as a not overly fast pass catching TE.  Do you want to invest a first round pick on a guy like that?

Being slow doesnt change the fact he has the ideal size and great hands.  But now we know that he isnt the explosive athlete that Vernon Davis or Jimmy Graham are.

For me personally, the combine is fun to watch, but its still just a dog and pony show. Game tape is king..
