I know a lot of people don't like Henne as backup and would prefer somebody else to be Bortles back up. I want to throw out some names with some thoughts and see what everyone thinks.

Brian Hoyer- Personally, I don't think he would want to come here and be a back up to Bortles. I think he believes he is a solid starter, and wouldn't accept a back up role. He has shown an ability to win, but he doesn't really do anything all that great.

Austin Davis- He did decent with the Rams. He showed an interest in throwing the long ball and did it relatively well. He performed extremely well when pressured, which was quite common behind a horrible offensive line. I think he is an extremely solid backup option that could lead us to victories should Bortles get injured, something I don't feel confident saying about Henne.

Jake Locker- Personally, I say hell no. Too injury prone, and still thinks he is a top class quarterback. Like Hoyer, I don't see him happy as a backup at this point.

Ryan Mallet- Has nice arm strength and has shown potential. Like Hoyer and Locker, he may feel he is better served as a starter.

Mark Sanchez- A solid #2 option with ability to win. Some teams will see him as a starter, so no chance we sign him.

Matt Moore- Played extremely well when given the starter role over Henne. Played much better than Henne. Decent backup option. Brings experience.

Josh McCown- Has already proven that he can be a solid backup option. Would need lots of help around him, which we are hoping to get in FA this year. Brings experience and may be a better mentor than Henne.

Shaun Hill- Pretty much the same as McCown.

I think we should strongly consider Austin Davis as he is still young, showed good potential and a capability to win when given the reigns with the Rams and played well behind a horrid offensive line.

Any thoughts on Davis, any QB listed as it concerns us, or guy I didn't list that may be a good option?
The only guy I'd be interested in is Josh McCown, and even though he's supposedly willing to be a backup, I think some team will tab him as a starter.

We will stick with Chad.

Unfortunately, that is the most likely option, but I'm hopeful in a world where we don't just blindly keep a guy because he is already there.

No to Austin Davis. You don't want a young guy as your immediate back up.

Chad isn't going anywhere because it's not like those other guys are much better than Henne.

I think most people are ok with him as a backup.  We just don't want him as a starter.
Backup QB is the least of my concerns.
Sanchez
As someone who followed Shaun Hill closely for 4 seasons,  I think he would be a good option as a # 2 QB if the Jaguars elect to move on from Chad Henne.  Hill has good accuracy,  football intelligence and instincts,  and leadership.    Hill is a team player.  If he signed with the Jaguars,  Blake Bortles would benefit from Hill's presence on the team.

All those guys are essentially Henne, but the blowhards here would never drop their pitchforks long enough to admit it.
Josh Freeman

Has experience working with Greg Olson, and is athletic. Should be better than Henne.
I was just thinking of Josh Freeman and had to look this thread up and mention his name. Good job Cable in beating me to the punch.

I think the Josh Freeman - Greg Olson combination works and we know Freeman will not cost much money, certainly less than Henne.

Sign Freeman and let them compete head to head.

I agree, at least bring in a couple of QBs to compete for the backup QB job.

Everyone one of us in here who has seen Henne play, knows exactly what he brings to the field.

Let's open up the competition for the backup QB position and see where it leads.

Do you guys remember how he left both TB and Minn? Then couldn't stay on the Giants roster more than a month? He's a head case with concussion issues now.
If Josh Freeman has nothing left in the tank then so be it.

I was just thinking that if anyone can help Josh Freeman it would be the guy he had the most success under and that would be Greg Olson when he was the OC in Tampa.

ESPN Cleveland fully expects the Browns to release Jason Campbell.

Campbell, 32, triggered an escalator in his contract because he played 45 percent of the snaps this past season and is now due $3.25 million in 2014. Beat writer Tony Grossi believes that's far too high a price to pay for a guy who was 1-7 as a starter and complained about the cold weather. Campbell and Brandon Weeden are expected to get pink slips this offseason, while Brian Hoyer (ACL surgery) should return to join an early-round draft pick at quarterback.

I'm not convinced that Campbell is any better than Henne at this point in his career.

While he may be released, that quote is from January 2014, and he's already been released from the Browns.  He's with the Bengals now.

Ahh. I linked to the current rotoworld page but grabbed an old quote. oops.

Anyway - yes he is rumored to be an imminent FA according to a list I saw at NFL.com a couple weeks ago.

I know Oesher classifies Henne as one of the best back ups in the NFL. I'm not huge on Henne, but I'm not a hater of Henne either, I'm just kind of blah on him. I guess he is still only 29, so he could be a decent back up option for years. My thinking at this moment is that he only has one year left on his current contract. At some point, we need to address a long term backup for Bortles, whether it is signing someone else, drafting someone with decent potential that isn't quite immediate starter material, but could be solid if called upon like Grayson, or giving Henne a longer term deal.
