Quote:Per PFT, Lynch and Shanny Jr. will both get six-year contracts.

So, basically, the 49ers will be paying them to watch from home for three years.

If PFT actually calls someone's son with a different first name "Junior" something is terribly wrong with the website. Or are you the one who does not know names have to be identical for the suffix to be used?

On topic, Kyle Shanahan can't accept a contract offer until after the Super Bowl. So even saying he will get a six-year contract is not good reporting either.

Quote:What I don't get is why hire him if he's going to hire a no. 2 that has experience? Why not just hire that guy instead

The whole thing is built around Shanahan and he is likely to have the final. Lynch will be his eyes and ears to help run everything. The No.2 will help Lynch on personnel matters as he has no experience in that.
I'd be sick if I were a 49ers fan

That might be a positive under the circumstance for 49ers fans.   The late William Clay Ford Sr. had the patience of Job,  resulting in Matt Millen lasting through 3 games of his 8th season.

I fully expected you to be the board's biggest critic of the hire because of the Matt Millen comparison. We know Jed York has no patience when it comes to coaches.

In watching the 49ers from a distance,  it's been practically all downhill once he moved on from Jim Harbaugh.   It's hard to even comprehend how quickly they went from a Super Bowl contender to a team near the bottom of the NFL.

Time will tell how John Lynch does as 49ers GM.  But w/o having any football front office experience,  much like was the case with Matt Millen,  it's natural to be skeptical that a turnaround for the 49ers will happen in the remainder of his decade.

This has happened before. I stopped rooting for the 49ers after they fired Steve Mariucci and went from playoff winners to clinching the top pick of the draft.
I'm sure 49ers fans are probably thinking "Can't be worse than Trent Baalke"

And little do they know how a few years ago, Jags fans were thinking "Can't be worse than Shack Harris."  Then we got Gene Smith.

That's more outta nowhere than an RKO.

Gene Smith was an in-house promotion.

Point is, it can be worse.

Don't stop there. Dave Caldwell hasn't done much better, and he was about to blow the 4th out of 5 top five picks before they brought in the general. Oh it gets worse.
Who the hell does the 49ers think they are?? The Jaguars??? Lol..

The Jaguars don't make stupid mistakes like this. They hire guys with prior executive office experience every time.

Gene Smith was a scout not an executive

OK wrong word then, but he was already employed by the team in its scouting department. That is not coming out of nowhere like John Lynch.

We hired Gene Smith.

Let that sink in. We hired Gene Smith.

Put down the catnip and think about what you just said. The Jaguars, who hired Gene Smith, don't make stupid mistakes when filling the GM chair.

We hired Gene Smith in 1994, right? He was an original Jaguar. Big difference from the 49ers hiring someone who had never been employed by any team after retiring as a player.
I think this hire is all name for the 49ers. He may do a good job there but the odds are certainly stacked against his success with no previous experience in personnel acquisition or scouting.

Well, if nothing else, he did graduate from Stanford.
