I'll admit when I first heard about this a few years back on "conspiracy" sites I figured it was crazy talk. But here it is mainstream news, Samsung admitting key words and phrases trigger recording devices through your "smart TV" to send recordings to third parties.

Talk about a police state......
Not my television. I don't have a Samsung. Or a SmartTV for that matter. We have 6 televisions in our house, and none of them are smart.
Just the other day I asked it "What's 2+2 television?" and it answered "DO YOU USE MARIJUANA?" which is totally not the answer.
I refuse to have any microphone, camera, or recording device that's connected to the internet in my house. I don't even like having a Cell Phone in all honesty.
I have a Samsung Smart TV but I'm still one step ahead because I have no one to talk to. That'll show them!
Just use white noise machines in all your rooms or play Black Sabbath at ear shattering levels while using headphones for the entertainment devices.

Well played set myself up for that one
I had one smart tv, but I put it in the garage, not because of this I just didn't think the interface was that great in comparison to other streaming devices. Dumb tv's are cheaper use the extra money you save not getting a smart tv and buy a better dumb tv and just get firetv/chromecast/roku/appletv/raspberry pi and make it a smart tv.

Which TVs aren't smart now?
In regards to the topic, I also have a major problem with this.

Smart TV is just a TV that is connected to the internet, they let you stream internet sites like Youtube, Hulu, Netflix it's really a great concept but some of them have microphones for the ultra lazy that want to speak commands to the TV instead of using the remote. Up until now it was only the fringe conspiracy sites saying the TV's had microphones and where sending that information to third parties (possibly the NSA) but now Samsung is pretty much saying well yeah of course we're sending that information out to third parties, but don't worry we protect your privacy lol.
This reminds me of the concerns gamers had back when Xbox One was released. It's one reason my wife and i chose never to buy an XBOX One (even though they got rid of the Kinect requirement). Thankfully my kids are fine with their 3DS's and playing PS3 and 360 for now. The 3DS thankfully has good child safety protections on it.
Maybe we should have some sort of regulation about this? :teehee:

Haha I know that my man, I'm a streaming fool. He said he had a "dumb" TV and that it was cheaper. I thought they were basically all smart TVs now.

Exactly what I thought of when I read this thread this morning. I have a young video game loving son and I refuse to get an Xbox One.

Hmmmm. News to me! Thanks.
From my experience early last year when I was still in the market for a tv, there aren't many non vizio smart tv's, that are 60"+, in the sub $1000 market. Though prices drop fast so theres probably more competition, but I would assume it's still mostly dumb tv's that dominate in that price range.
I have a Visio smart TV, and find the apps to not be worth the trouble. Slow loading, frequent re-buffering and sometimes Netflix won't even load. This, with an ethernet connection. My first generation Roku functions better.

All of their UI's are terrible and there is not enough power to run them. My $30 Chromecast does everything I could want.

A simple disable of the location feature on your cell phone or tv would eliminate any threat of your privacy being invaded.

I got the Samsung smart tv and the refresh rate and interface is average. The only reason why I got it is because I can pair and sync it with my Note 3 which has the Netflix and Hulu apps loaded while im at work so all I have to do when I get home is sync and play the shows I selected from my phone.
It also increased my energy bill, plus I ended up getting a separate network because it sucked all my bandwidth up on the original one which was a Netgear dual band 1300 mbps.
