What do mob bosses, illegal gambling, cheating, Government corruption, and distortion of major medical and scientific studies regarding injuries and concussions all have in common? that's right. The NFL.

The NFL learned a lesson from many players who suffered mental illness after retiring and has been very transparent about concussions since then. Now the NFL is doing its own concussion studies and has a program to help Pop Warner and high school teams protect the brains of their players. So there is no reason to worry about that anymore  However, nobody ever talks about the NFL doing studies on playing with skeletal and muscular injuries, pinched nerves, etc. That topic is one I want to discuss in a separate thread, but apparently I am the only board member interested in it.

Maybe we should exhume the bodies of the dead gladiators and be shocked at how they had knee damage, concussions and oh yeah sword wounds.

At the lower levels, I can understand the need to apply lessons learned and teach better methods and be mindful of physical development.  For everyone who makes it to the pros, you know what your involved with and if you don't then you really don't pay attention.

Did you know people in construction suffer from serious pain and alot of them never see retirement?  Yeah turns out working on roofing or framing your whole life is bad for your joints and back.  Maybe we need to institute robot football.

Every time a flag is thrown for targeting in NFL the fans of the team that gets the penalty whine and complain about how soft the NFL has become.  Then people turn around and want to talk about the big bad NFL and how they don't care about the players.

If people hate the NFL brass so much, they dont care...you just gave them the most watched show in the history of television.
I really hate when people compare football players to gladiators or warriors. It's a physical game just leave it at that, but come on, gladiators......

In many ways it is when you think about the politics and movement of money in football.  But at this stage it isn't as brutal so I do understand your point.

I'm making the comparison because hindsight about older players and their injuries gets drawn on and pulled out to elicit sympathy for the plight of older players that have problems at an accelerated scale compared to other professions.  I have friends in construction and honestly I don't know how some of them make it out of bed every day after 25 years.

Actually it is a decent comparison. The gladiators were sport for entertainment too.

They fought to the death, it's night and day. If ANYTHING is even remotely close it would be UFC

That was going to be my next comment.  The pugilistic sports are more gladiatorial in many ways but the handling and fame is a good comparison.

Many, if not most, gladiator fights were not fought to the death.

My contractor said even if he was rich, he would keep remodeling homes the rest of his life. He does it because he loves doing it. I don't know if that is a popular sentiment for people who do the other construction stuff - actually building the homes that he flips and remodels. But what does that have to do with the NFL?

Unfortunately NFL teams are not applying lessons learned about many injuries. While concussions are getting a lot of attention now, many soft tissue injuries and broken bones are still not treated properly. That's something I tried twice to talk about in a separate thread, but nobody replied, so I assumed only I am interested in the topic.

That's news to me, I know many of them where not fought against other humans. For example Romans used Lions and Bears ect... but I've always read historically it was a sport to mock death right up to and including death.

The purpose was for the Romans to appease the populations lust to see death, they craved it, some argue because of the war state Rome was built upon.

I could really go on and on about what has been learned but I'll leave it to google and Sports Medicine.

What is interesting is the Gladiatorial period aligns with the Pax Romana.  Internal peace while containing the flash points at the borders of the empire.

You all can't seriously be telling me that this thread is about to descend into a discussion about gladiators and Ancient Rome are you? I know it's hard, but try and stay on topic for once by actually commenting about the video that I linked. What did you all think about the allegations that many NFL owners have mob ties? that SB lll was possibly rigged in order to push the idea of an AFL-NFL merger? and that the NFL has been hiding statistics, and fabricating stories about concussions for the last few decades (until very recently)?

Sorry that one's my fault lol

Some threads have a mind of their own...this is one of them.

I still find it funny how many people act like they hate Goodell because he is the guy in charge, but turn around and love the owners of most NFL teams....as if Goodell isn't doing exactly what they tell him to do.

Well I can assure you that many of us are very interested in discussing arm and leg concussions.
None of the accusations surprise me. The NFL is nothing if not a moneymaker. Period. And however that has to happen is how it's going to happen. There are echelons of money and power that us normal folks can't even begin to fathom, and it's why we have a hard time accepting that stuff like this can happen and no one does anything about it. To those who have it at that level, money and power is everything.

I agree with MoJo that if you don't know what you're getting into physically by the time you reach the pros, you're either an idiot or you haven't been paying attention. It's like saying those who went into the military after 9/11 and OIF/OEF started didn't know they'd most likely go to war. Don't be so naive. The idea that nothing will happen to you is foolish. Take responsibility for making the decision to play a physically demanding sport that WILL hurt you and move on.
