If a FB can also be a major part of Special Teams,  having a FB would seem to make a great amount of sense.  That much more opportunity for a versatile Offense.

Dude... seriously? The OP started off this topic with "I really hope we'll draft a FB in the later rounds"........

I don't really think you need someone with the "FB" designation, necessarily.

Whether it's a TE, OL, or even a LB or DL... as long as you can execute the play I don't think it matters.

Now, you're not likely to see defensive guys unless it's a specific play call (a goal line call, for example)... but for everyday FB duty, there are others perfectly capable of performing the role.

It comes down to what the guy labeled "FB" is capable of.  If he can do more than just FB, like anyone playing the role of FB would be asked to, then you're more likely to see one make the roster.  It's now a position filled by more versatile players.  So, whoever plays "FB" is going to have to at least keep up talent wise with the TEs and other players who are there because they can also star on special teams, block, and catch passes.  It's a fight for the last roster spot or two.  Whatever label that guy has is not significant as long as he can play special teams, block in the run game, and run routes/catch passes (and do them all well.)

Versatility obviously is a good thing, but offense is where we need a fullback.
We need to

Draft or sign a free agent?

That's Jdub. Wrong, as always.
It seems like teams have been going with these lighter and faster linebackers lately. Tell me if im wrong but wouldn't an obvious counter to a 220 pound quick linebacker be a fullback that will pancake his butt?

I don't think we need to draft one as it is a low value position but I would love to see Jax reestablish itself as a hard nose running football team. Bring back the power I formation and eat up time of possession.

Size obviously is less important than speed, quickness, strength, agility, and physical fitness. Small linebackers are playing better than some big LBs. I think one reason the 3-4 defense started becoming popular is drafting "tweeners" (players who are undersized for the defensive line after playing there in college) could easily get jobs as 3-4 OLBs. Anonymous scouts and executives talk about that every year: Player X is too small to be a 4-3 DE, but fast enough to play OLB.

This is why the power running game is coming back. Since the league has become pass centric line backers have gotten smaller and faster to help with coverage. That gives an opportunity for a team to move an agile, fast, power back down the field. With a good o-line of course.
Has anyone else noticed that Greg Jones is still with the Jaguars? He's currently a "scouting associate" with the team.

I had no idea, but that's great. Remember that time Dexter Reid tried to tackle him in college? LMAO

The word "still" is inaccurate if you are thinking Greg Jones was a Jaguar his entire playing career.

Well Jones did retire as a Jag...
Did Hackett use one in Buffalo? If so he probably will here as well

Thanks for clearing that up. I would have stayed up all night pondering the accurateness of the word "still"
Quote:Greg Jones played FB for the Jaguars once. He didn't play in the Pro Bowl though.
I loved Greg Jones. Watching him was fun.

I like it when players do that.

Carrying a FB on a Game Day roster who isn't a major contributor on Special Teams is difficult unless the FB is going to see action much more than the typical NFL FB sees on Offense in this era.
I hope so.

We've been trying to make-do with Alualu and we've not been getting those short-yardage gains.

Time to stop trying to do it "on the cheap" and bring back a FB.
