Does anyone know which free agents are most likely to get the franchise or transition tag this year?

The Lions say they are willing to slap Ndamukong Suh with it, but they don't have enough money for that. The transition tag was not mentioned as a possibility.

IIRC the Cowboys would rather put the franchise tag on Dez Bryant than DeMarco Murray. Could they put the franchise tag on one and transition tag on the other?

The Broncos want to keep both Thomases if possible. I think they would rather put the franchise tag on Demariyus. But what about the transition tag for Julius?

I have no idea what the Packers want to do, but they should put the franchise tag on Bryan Bulaga. Randall Cobb said he wants to stay in Green Bay next season.

Who do you think will be tagged a franchise or transition player at the beginning of free agency?

A team can't use both tags in the same league year.  Also, a transition tag would be useless in a few of the scenarios you listed because there are going to be several teams that can and will offer more money to free agents than the Lions, Broncos or Cowboys so the transition tag would be pointless.

That rule does not make any sense. What purpose does it serve?

It makes plenty of sense when you take into consideration that the franchise tag grants the player the average of the top 5 salaries at his position for the year in which he is tagged and the transition tag only allows the player to test free agency and gives the original team the right to match any offer he receives.  A team would use the transition tag in a scenario where they were comfortable with what offers the player might get and that they would be significantly less than the top 5 players in the league at that position.

The reason why they both can't be used in the same year would likely have to do with the players not wanting to allow the teams to have even more power to hold players hostage and doing exactly what you're describing in your original post.  It would essentially be a 2nd franchise tag in a lot of scenarios but it would require the team to pay a lot less money.  Other teams may not be inclined to pursue a player on the transition tag knowing the original team would likely match the offer anyway.

The players may not have gotten the best deal in the most recent CBA, but if somehow the league had negotiated the use of both tags at the same time the players' representatives would have likely found it difficult to find work again... ever.  The players ultimately want to be able to hit free agency as much as possible because that's where the big paydays come from, even if they end up re-signing with their original team.

The transition tag is only used in certain circumstances.  Players like Suh would never get transitioned because not only is he going to be top 5 at his position in salary, he's going to be the top paid at his position period.  Franchise tagging him would not only put Suh at financial risk if a severe injury occurred while he was tagged, but it would also likely mean a slightly lower annual salary than he might normally get under a normal contract.  The risk of injury makes the franchise tag very dangerous for him financially and players like him have every reason to be nervous about it and even a little resentful about it when a team uses it because teams can use it with no intent of signing the player long term but just as a means to get one more year out of them.
Chiefs OLB Justin Houston is a prime candidate to be tagged if he's not signed before the Tag deadline approaches.   I'll be surprised if Houston hits the open market in 2015 as an UFA.

Another Defensive player that I think will probably be tagged if not signed before the Tag deadline approaches is Giants DE Jason Pierre-Paul.

The Giants don't have enough money for the franchise tag on JPP. If they do that they can't draft any rookies.

The Giants are going to be freeing up salary cap space.   The only question is how much.   But it should be enough to tag JPP and sign all of their rookies.
D6, I'm pretty curious to hear what you think the Lions are going to do with Ndamukong this offseason. Are you guys potentially losing anyone else to FA who the Jags might target? Kinda curious about Nick Fairley as well.

By the way, I'm sure I'm preaching to the quire here, but you guys got hosed in that playoff game. I hope I can hate the cowboys at least half as much as you must.

It is always OK to hate the Cowboys. My dad trained me to always root against them when Jimmy Johnson was the coach and I can't make myself shake off that hatred even though they are a little better behaved now.

Thanks,  Treestone Ice.

The playoff loss to the Cowboys still is unsettling.   I've never seen a play before this when Pass Interference was called,  then announced by the Referee,  then erased.   Being that the NFL admitted that Defensive Holding should have been called earlier on that play,   at the very least it should have been a 1st Down.   There's no way of knowing what would have happened if the Lions would had a 1st Down.   But not knowing what would have happened is what makes the situation especially difficult.

Re-signing Ndamukong Suh is the top priority of the Lions.   If the Lions don't sign Suh as the deadline to tag a player approaches,   I think there's a 50-50 chance he will get the Franchise Tag.   This despite the near $ 27 million it will cost on this year's salary cap.    If the Lions don't tag Suh and he hits the open market,  a team with much more salary cap space will probably land him.

If the Lions aren't able to re-sign Suh and decide not to tag him,   I do think there's a pretty good chance Nick Fairley will be re-signed.   Fairley finally got his weight under control in 2015,  after being demoted from the 1st Team in training camp.   Unfortunately,  he suffered a season ending knee injury in the comeback win over the Falcons in London.    Fairley's tangible stats didn't jump out in the 8 games he played but he got plenty of pressure on the opposing QB's.   Because of the durability factor and Fairley still having a case pending in the legal system from 2012,  it's very hard to predict what his market value will be.   This is a classic case where a one or two year contract seems to make sense for both parties.

DE George Johnson,  who was a find as a street FA,  is scheduled to be a FA this year.   Johnson might be someone the Jaguars look at in terms of providing depth at the Leo position .   He was the Lions 3rd best DE this season and ended up effectively replacing Willie Young,  who had a very good season with the Bears before tearing his Achilles tendon against the Lions in Game # 15.

It's possible,  not probable,   the Jaguars could have interest in bringing Rashean Mathis back.   Mathis will turn 35 later this year but had two good seasons with the Lions.  He wants to come back to the Lions but it comes down to both sides reaching an agreement.   Mathis'  leadership skills have made a huge difference in the development of CB Darius Slay.

Another former Jaguar that had a good season for the Lions and is an UFA is C.J. Mosley.   Other than the one game suspension,  Mosley was an asset for the Lions.   While Mosley doesn't have Fairley's ability,  he more than held his own as a starter in the 2nd half of the season.

A player that's very underrated that the Jaguars might have interest in is T Corey Hilliard.   He missed the last 15 games of the season because of a foot injury.   But when he did play in prior seasons and in the pre-season,   Hilliard was an effective (  not dominate ) all around RT.   With enough versaility to play all Offensive Line positions other than Center.    The Lions had a very high winning % in the games that Hilliard started over the years.
What was C.J. Mosley suspended for?

Thanks D6. Thoughtful and thorough stuff.

The pass interference debacle was unreal. I wonder how different things would've been had Detroit gone on to play a team they are obviously familiar with in Green Bay. Detroit had a much better defense than Dallas in 2014. It had to feel at least a little good to watch them lose when Dez got the Calvin Johnson call on a questionable play the very next week though! Bitter sweet.

You called it on Willie Young, my buddy is a bears fan and he said the guy was tearing it up before the injury. An Achilles is hard to come back from. We signed Reggie Hayward as a FA from Denver a while back; he showed a ton of promise and had the same injury. He never regained that burst, it's really a shame.

As for Suh, I'm very curious to know our GMs opinion on him. Penalties and Roger Goodell aside, Ndamukong is arguably the best DT in the league. Definitely top 3-5. Players like that coming off their rookie contracts are hard to find. I would hope Jacksonville does everything they can to steal him from you guys, no offense.
I still have such mixed feelings on Suh, I know he is/can be a great player but he has done some dumb stuff that just annoys me.

I would love to see Mathis back as a Jag, if anything to at least retire as a Jag. One of my all time favorite players.

When is the deadline to tag players?

The Lions would have gone to Seattle while the Packers hosted Carolina.

I think The Pass Interference That Wasn't totally changed the momentum because the first three quarters were all Lions and after that it was all Cowboys. Pete Morelli, not the Cowboys, declawed the Lions that day IMO.

The only good thing about it was the NFL said it will talk about making pass interference reviewable. I doubt anybody would get that idea if Morelli had not reversed the penalty to make the Lions punt

When is the deadline to tag players?

I don't care how good he is; I don't want that guy on my team because he is the dirtiest player in the NFL. As long as he is alive I will hate him with a passion for trying to hurt people by stepping on and kicking them  with a complete disregard for how they feel both physically and emotionally. Yes, an elite defensive tackle is always a good thing to have, but nothing is worth having that man on the team. Plus we have Senderrick.

There is a thread with the whole NFL schedule including tag dates, but I can't remember what the deadline is.
