The NFL might finally get smart and add pass interference penalties without a tipped ball to the list of reviewable plays. If they do, you can thank Pete Morelli for it.

Giants owner John Mara said, "I know that's something we're going to discuss at the competition committee starting in February and I'm looking forward to that because I think the time has come to, not only have that discussion and that debate, but to really think about a change in that rule. The replay was implemented in order to try to correct the major calls in games, to get the big call right, and they're not too many calls that are bigger than a defensive pass interference."
What do you think?
I think its a no brainer to make reviewable.
Quote:I think it's a no brainer to make reviewable.
Me too. Especially if it happens in the end zone or on third down
It should be reviewed because it is such a game changing call. But what I think should be reviewable are those defenseless receiver and blows to the head calls. Like the one Telvin got called for against Andre Johnson.
Contact happens on almost every single play between a CB and a WR. How will you be able to differentiate between pass interference (offensive and defensive) and a good play?
they should add roughing the passer calls to that list as well....
Does anyone remember the game in SD two? years ago, where we got called defensive PI on keenan allen, and our guy didn't even touch him? like wasn't within three yards of him...
This will just slow down the game even more. It will be like the NBA in the last 2 minutes where they review everything.

I always hear commentators talk about cornerbacks not looking at the ball when they touch the receivers like that is what makes officials throw their flags.
You know there is interference when the cornerback is holding the receiver's arm. Once that happened during a Colts game and no flag were thrown.

It happens in every game. On almost every single play. At this point they might as well take the CBs off the field and let the QBs throw to wide open WRs because that's what the NFL really wants.

They can address it the way fumble recoveries were added: only allow reviews in the end zone first, then vote again to include DPI in the field of play if it is not called too much in the last two minutes. Or they could make called DPI revewable to confirm it like they do for touchdowns, then later allow challenges of uncalled DPI. And the NFL could write a more specific definition of pass interference to make it less of a judgment call.
What if they are reviewing something else on the play and then notice that a flag should have been thrown? This could get ridiculous. I'm all for getting it right, but I think a lot of ticky tack stuff will look more like PI in slow-mo. I'm not in favor of this for how I'm envisioning it impacting the games. Maybe I'm overreacting though.

Good point. But yes you are overreacting. The whole idea is to make DPI challengeable - let the coaches throw their red flags when obvious DPI is missed by the officials. it would not affect plays that are reviewed for other reasons.

If you put your post in super slow-mo, it kinda looks like this:
See how much worse that looks?
But thanks, I needed that.
So you're saying making DPI reviewable would result in more bad calls?
That does not make any sense. The NFL is not going to say, "If it looks worse in slow motion than at full speed, call pass interference." What they would say is, "Look for this or that," to take some of the judgment out of it. That way there will be more consistency in how DPI is called.
Better yet. Make it just a 15 yard penalty. Not spot of the foul.

Came to post this.
Oh goody. More reviews. 4-hour games.

My thoughts exactly.
I'm not surprised by this one bit. Those PI calls can get pretty ticky tacky at times.
As long as it's not automatically reviewed and they have to use a challenge, I guess so. But then again, that could just end up meaning we see more challenges, so I'm leaning towards no.

This would solve a lot of issues. Even Muschamp (I know its a college example JW) admitted this year that they were intentionally throwing it deep at the end of a game to try and get a 15 yard pass interference.
If college coaches are doing it just for 15 yards, you know NFL guys are doing it just for a shot at 40 or 50.
In general, I don't mind if some pass interference is reviewed, but it really could mess up the speed of the game.
