Quote:It is. But sometimes its better to wait it out for better opportunities especially when your current option is a dysfunctional franchise. John Fox did just that when he declined to interview for the Jets job.
Declining the Jets job has nothing to do with the team being dysfuntional. He wants to be the Bears coach because of his relationship with the new general manager.

Quote:One benefit JDR will provide the Raiders is his familiarity with the AFC West from his days as Broncos defensive coordinator.
Including his own players. That familiarity means he already knows a lot about them, unlike in Jacksonville where he knew nobody after switching conferences. So he will be more prepared this time.
Obviously it will help Oakland's offense more than the defense during games against the Broncos.

Quote:I think he's a decent coach, but like you said I think he lacked the proper preparation. Just like Fred Taylor said when he went to NE to play, he said " the difference between a Shell hotdog and Ruth’s Chris steaks."
He also said something interesting about Del Rio which most of us feel about Gus Bradley:
“At the end of the day, [Del Rio] is not a head coach,” Taylor told Eric Adelson of the PostGame.com. “He’s a great defensive coach. But he’s not a head coach.”

When reading what you mentioned, it reminded me of what Rashean Mathis said recently. While Mathis didn't mention JDR by name, it doesn't take much to connect the dots:
http://www.mlive.com/lions/index.ssf/201...athis.html
The 12-year veteran is also drawn to the idea of continuing to play for coach Jim Caldwell.
"The coaches know my feelings on that," Mathis said. "Coming back here and finishing something that we have started, that Jim has started, I would love to. He's definitely the best NFL coach I've ever had, in a number of ways."

Being that JDR coached against AFC West Offenses, that should help the Raiders Defense.
Even if the Broncos have new systems, JDR will be very familiarity with most of the returning personnel from the team.

Being part of a more talented defense certainly helps. So does having a defensive coordinator who is good enough to be a head coach candidate for five or six teams. Who would not want to be part of that?

At the same time, the Jaguars had plenty of talent on Defense during much of Rashean Mathis' time with the team. Including DT's Marcus Stroud, John Henderson, LB's Mike Peterson and Daryl Smith, and SS Donovin Darius. Not to mention, Mike Smith did a good enough job with the Jaguars as D/C that he became the Falcons HC.
While I respect JDR as a coach and as a person, it's attention getting that two of the Jaguars best players from the last decade came out with the comments that they did.

Agreed. I think it's always been a knock on Del Rio that he's not as dedicated to the craft as most head coaches in the league. Coughlin practically lived at the stadium during the season when he was here. Even after he was fired, and before he was hired by NY, he'd spend hours at home going over tape of college and pro players to stay up with the players out there. He attended the combine as a scout during the year he was out of the league. That was a guy who was married to the game. Del Rio was almost the exact opposite.
Interesting Football Life on Coughlin.

Good for him, I hope he turns that sinking ship around.

Well, no matter what Jags fans think of JDR, he's still the last Jags HC to win a road playoff game, as a big underdog too.
How long do you think it will be until the Jags win their next road playoff game?

Jags vs Raiders would be fun.
I wonder how long until that matchup happens?

I don't think we were under dogs in that Steeler game and even if we were, we certainly were not big under dogs as we had already beaten the Steelers earlier that season.

Let's just worry about getting into the playoffs first. I'd expect to see the team pushing in that direction this coming season.

They hired him. Good luck JDR.

They do have an interesting cap situation though. They just drafted Mack and Carr. Tuck is still you enough to get a 3 year surge. They could get another defensive player like Lenord or Gregory to pair with Mack and sign a lot of Offensive players. They have the same situation as us. They could turn then back to a 8-8 10-6 team

Quote:Raiders will be in the playoffs in 2 years.comepletely agree. rivers isnt getting younger, manning will retire soon and alex smith is well alex smith so JDR will have the best QB in the division. and apparently hes trying to add Mike Smith and Trestman. that is a hell of a coaching trio if it happens.
JDR was never a bad coach, he was delt a diminishing roster with horrible draft after draft. The raiders finally seemed to have figured out the whole drafting thing and are accumulating talent. Add a more mature JDR and some wise positional coaching hires, they could be in great shape. The optimism in the Bay Area is high.

And Oakland has suddenly become competent on draft day to boot.
