Quote:tbqh I think we'll be using FA for our O-line upgrades. We've got a lot of youth on the line as it is.
They are going to use the Draft for Defense and FA for Offense.
I can see Drob as the most improved player. IIRC, this season was the first season where he was completely dedicated to the RB spot. His rookie year he was split out wide and ran routes from the slot more than anything else.
I would expect him to get even better going into his second season as a full time RB.
I would love a real upgrade over Toby.
Quote:If anyone thinks were taking a RB in the top 4 rounds they are crazy. One, because this team has so many other needs already, and two, DRob played great behind a horrible line when he was the starter and healthy.
Caldwell also failed to mention Toby in the top 3 FA signings, that speaks to whos going to be the starter next year as well.
Is it really necessary to take a RB in the top 4 rounds in order to get an effective back?

If you look at the numbers, round 2-3 is the sweet spot for finding running backs. Looking at the past few drafts this has held true. Gio Bernard, Jeremy Hill, Eddie Lacy, and Jamaal Charles were all taken in that range.

I'm not arguing that this isn't true, but I think you need to look at guys who are among the best in the league this year who were
not picked in the 2nd or 3rd rounds like Justin Forsett, Arian Foster, or Alfred Morris. All were taken in the 6th round or later (Foster was undrafted).
If you've got a scouting staff worth it's salt, and a GM who trusts their analysis, you can find guys outside of that rd. 2-3 window to offer competition to DRob and Gerhart.
Do any of you think that just maybe Caldwell isn't going to share precisely what he plans to do in the draft in advance?
I think people are really putting a lot of weight into a comment made by the GM here thinking this is a clear indication we're not going after a running back in the draft. It's like they completely ignore the track record of the GM not tipping his hand so they can speculate now what will happen in a few months. We weren't taking a QB in the draft last year with that 3rd pick if you listened to Caldwell. I don't trust much of anything he says from the point the season ends until the day after the conclusion of the draft.
I love the running game, its the reason I watch football and Ive watched countless videos of great backs from the past - Payton, Sayers, Sanders, Smith, Campbell, Csonka, Brown, OJ, Bo, Fred Taylor, etc over and over. When I had NFL rewind I basically just watched the best RB matchups, but if you are talking about being a GM and making decisions to win games it just isn't a position that is worth a high pick. I would not take a GUARANTEED Adrian Peterson in the first round over POSSIBLY having a star DE, lineman, CB, playmaking FS, etc. The difference in production for a team between a mid tier back and an incredibly high end back are not big enough to warrant taking a RB in the first 3-4 rounds no matter how good he is. Getting Barry Sanders in the 4th is probably worth it, but someone that good will not be around that long, some sucker will take him in the first.
Quote:My opinion on running backs is, it's great to have a star running back, and we don't have one. However, because NFL running backs have such a short shelf life, star running back is the last thing you add to your team. I'm thinking 2016 draft. Not 2015 draft. When we have a competitive team, we spend a high draft pick on a RB and run him into the ground for the next 4 years. We're not there yet.
That said, Caldwell has shown us that he is capable of hiding his intentions.
Also, I think we're a little too quick to write off Toby Gerhart. He spent 2014 battling injuries and a bad offensive line. I think there's a very good chance he could have a big year next year.

There are worse things than spending a high draft pick on a RB if you end up with Adrian Peterson (without the child beating). But I don't see a star RB in this draft, and the ones we have are serviceable. Much of the rushing yardage (or lack thereof) is due to the OL anyway.

Nope. Only reason I would take one that high is if you had a playoff team already. Still wouldnt touch one in the first round.
I thought DRob improved significantly over the course of the season.
I think he still needs to add some weight and strength so he can be better at breaking arm tackles.
His best running skills are his vision and patience in setting up blocks so I don't think the added weight would bring any detriment to his game.
I feel like at this point in time we wont be seeing a top round pick be a RB but things can change by the time the draft comes around.
Who was the most improved poster?
First round RB is only a smart move in fantasy football.
Idk guys, I would rather draft a legit RB than take my chances with a 3rd round guy like Gratz.
Our best days were when we had a very strong running game. I don't think I'm sold on Denard, although I am optimistic about him.
I would love for us to draft one in round 3 if one of the top RBs is still on the board.
We need a nasty-tempered RT, a pass catching TE, and vast improvement from the young OL-men, WRs and QB. And an OC who brings it all together quickly. I see FA being used here if the players are available. I don't think they will look for a RB or WR in FA. I also think Chad Henne will be the backup QB in 2015. With Fisch gone, Morris may not have a lock on the developmental QB spot if Caldwell sees somebody he likes better.
On D we have a solid core but need play makers and difference makers. We need 3 or 4 more impact players on D. A stud on the DL who draws double teams, a run and hit LB to pair with Telvin Smith on the outside, and a play-making FS who is always around the ball. There are some nice pieces in place and under contract. Now to take the next step that makes this a great defense that gives teams significant match-up problems and creates turnovers and points. We saw flashes of that in 2014. We need to see it a lot more in 2015.
I think with another solid offseason and a more favorable schedule, the 2015 Jags do have a shot at the playoffs. There's still a lot of growing up to do, but the one thing about time is, it's relentless. The clock keeps ticking and the young team will keep growing.
I really think it is entirely possible our RBs will be the exact same next season, with roles more defined.
The key will be the improvement of the offensive line.
DRob - Starter
Gerhart - 3rd down back/short yardage
Todman - change of pace, KR
Storm - depth

This sounds right. Hopefully whoever our next OC is won't run the stretch plays with Toby. Run those with Denard, Todman, or Storm.

Exactly.
If the RB position seems to lack star power they could always target a guy like Henry from Bama in the 2016 draft.
If they feel the need to upgrade Storm (or in the event they cut Gerhart -- which I don't think they do after just one season) they can do that this year much later than round 3 and still get value.
If Melvin Gordon is available in the 2nd I think you take him.
Quote:If Melvin Gordon is available in the 2nd I think you take him.
Why?
There is a FS, Oline, Dline, LB, we could take in the second and improve the team more.
