No kidding.
If people knew how much money my wife and I have spent on our pets (several dogs and a parrot), they would probably be shocked.

That being said, I think I would draw the line when it comes to a goldfish.

I used to have a goldfish that my son won at the fair that I had to feed shelled peas because it got bloat belly and was swimming upside down...but $300?? I don't think so!!

You buy goldfish at Petsmart? You monster! I only buy goldfish from breeders certified for good animal health and care. Sure they cost $150 per fish, but they're so much better behaved than the Petsmart goldfish.

WHOOSH!
Goldfish can live a surprisingly long time if you take good care of them.  I know it seems silly to spend so much on an animal where most of them are fairly identical.  We used to have Goldfish when we had a fountain in front of our house.  We eventually got rid of it because it became a hassle to clean.

Our goldfish lived for more than 10 Human years. Now I'm not sure how much time that equates in terms of goldfish years, but I think that's pretty decent.

The goldfish my son had lived about that long too. He was kept in a huge fish tank in his room and he got so big that when the fish died he was WAY beyond flushing size. I kinda miss that fish...but I don't want to have to deal with a tank again!

A properly cared-for goldfish in a suitable (i.e., huge) habitat can live for upwards of 20 years, longer than most dogs or cats. If your two-year-old dog needed surgery to save its life, would you do it, or would you let the dog die and get a new one?

Of course, given that the average goldfish costs about $2 and the average dog...let's say $500, this was the equivalent of spending about $117,500 on that dog...

I wouldn't do it, but I can understand why someone with enough money and attachment to the fish would.

This really isn't a big deal. People will spend that much on a pair of shoes or sunglasses (the list goes on and on).
