City of Seattle Law that Gives Garbage Collectors New Police-Like Powers Takes Effect
 

A tough new law passed in September by the People’s Republic of Seattle, Washington, which will literally make it illegal for residents and businesses to throw out food, is effective January 1st.

I think its for a good cause. A lot of people would be shocked at how much food is wasted in this Country and dumped. When a lot of that food can go to families in need, or the homeless.

Anyone has the right to examine trash so long as it is placed at or near the end of one's driveway. I wouldn't call that police-like powers, since trash is considered abandoned property. Giving them the ability to right a citation is stupid. How will you contest it? They just destroyed the evidence, and the person writing the ticket doesn't hold a sworn position.

I suppose they could give them that authority. There's no one better to do it then the garbage men. I just don't like broadening the scope of power to include garbage men. I'm not totally against the idea of what they're doing; I'm not totally for it, either. 

 

The limit is 10%? How do we know they're not at 9% when they're cited? Meh... I guess I'm just a bit reluctant is all.

Personally I recycle everything, I compost raw food, grass clippings and the whole 9 yards. But how the hell is this anyone's business? Why would anyone continue to live in a community that has the authority to give you a citation over your garbage?

 

I'd be out of there as soon as possible, that's just ridiculous on every level. But no surprise Seattle has a notoriously socialist leaning local government. 

The sale of garbage disposals just went through the roof in Seattle.

That is just stupid.  Stupid laws that do nothing to fix whatever they are trying to fix.

The first step to fixing anything is trying to fix that thing. I'm not sure this law will do any good, but I'm not sure that doing good is the point of it.

 

It sounds more like a republican style below the line tax increase. It's a shame to see the left wing turning to such shenanigans.

I don't see much wrong with it.   The fine is $1.   They're just trying to get people to stop sending so much organic waste to the landfill.  

 

Instead of considering it "police-like powers" and "a fine," why not just say the garbage collection will bill people (a dollar!) for misusing the garbage service?    I know that headline wouldn't get as many page views.

It's a good law. People are supposed to throw food into the yard waste, not the recycle. This law just holds people accountable for what they are supposed to do.

Take a big, nasty dump in your trash once or twice.

 

Problem solved.

The cause isn't justification for the nanny state. Almost every law can be justified the questions should be is it necessary and is it within the confines of government to over see?

So I take it you won't be moving to Seattle soon?

 

That's the genius of federalism (on a local, city scale). They can do nanny type things and you can make sure you don't live there.

No argument here of course local laws are subject to the local populace and their threshold of tolerance. Me personally I seek areas with severely less intrusion.
