Quote:I just don't see how nobody would know about tampering if it happened. That is the kind of thing you would see reported everywhere.
Doug Marrone waited until the third day to opt out of his contract. If he already knew the Jets wanted him, why didn't he quit the day Rex Ryan was fired? Something must have happened the first two days to make him hesitant about quitting.
Doug Marrone might have told the Bills ownership and Front Office that if you don't provide me with more security moving forward, I'm going to leave Buffalo. If that happened, which I believe is likely, the Bills called his bluff. If Marrone didn't have another highly likely viable HC option, he would have been foolishly to leave Buffalo.
Quote:Would you trust Marrone with your team after he just pulled some [BAD WORD REMOVED] like this?
I wouldn't. I'm not ready to say that Doug Marrone comes across as a less accomplished Nick Saban but the possibility does come to mind.
Quote:That appears to be accurate. The new owners declined to extend his contract. Then I read this oin NFL.com:
However, Ian Rapoport also said this:
So maybe he wanted out of Buffalo because of what the new owners want to do.
I don't think there was any tampering because if there was, that would be reported everywhere and nobody would be surprised Marrone quit.
I find it hard to believe that Doug Marrone would have left Buffalo if Bills ownership was willing to give him a lucrative contract extension UNLESS he had direct or indirect contact from at least one other team that highly valued his services.
Tampering can come in different forms. If the tampering is overt, it would be reported. Back channel tampering is much more difficult to prove but it's something that happens often.
Quote:Trust? This is the NFL - it's a business. Don't worry - this is one of those once in a lifetime issues - NFL teams are not often on the verge of being sold when they hire a new coach.
Also - why would anyone think there was tampering by the Jets? It's been assumed for months that the Jets were getting rid of Rex. For all we know Marrone may have considered this action back in October. Once he heard that Bill Polian, or whomever, may be coming he probably started thinking about a place to live in New Jersey.
Even if Doug Marrone was considering this action for months, it would only have significance if the Jets and/ or at least one other team had interest in his HC services.
Quote:What I know is when tampering occurs, NFL.com reports it. This time I did not read the word tampering anywhere on that website.
NFL.Com better have definitive proof of tampering if they are going to report it. The same with any media outlet.
Tampering is common when it comes to NFL Player Free Agency. Yet, there have only been a few cases in which there was enough tangible proof to prove it.
Quote: My take is that unless Doug Marrone had information that he would be able to get another NFL HC job, he wouldn't have left Buffalo. Even under the possible scenarios you mentioned above, leaving an NFL job w/o a very high degree of certainty that you can get another NFL job, would be a very risky decision. It's not like Marrone has a track record along the lines of Bill Belichick, Mike McCarthy, and Mike Tomlin. There are some people that follow the Bills close that believe the Bills went 9-7 this season despite Marrone. His work is far from universally viewed in a positive manner.
If Marrone ends up with the Jets or Bears, he's going to be dealing with problematic QB situations as well.
His decision to not go for the fg against KC lost that game. Bills would be 10-6 and maybe 11 win team if he had coached better.
Weren't there reports of Marrone having issues with the Bills front office earlier in the year? Such as he wanted absolute control but the FO was cuffing him and a reported clash during a practice? If this is the case, I could see Marrone doing this just as the ultimate "F You," I could take the 4 mil and go coach high school football in So Cal or Sunny Florida and be a happy man
I remember reading somewhere today that Marrone was not on board with the Watkins trade and was unhappy about losing that 1st round pick. On the Jets, he will have QB issues, sure. But, he will have picks to try and solve those issues.
