It's hard to say he's the best. This was a heck of a draft.

 

Colvin was excellent at his pick just like Telvin was. Linder played very well. Robinson was lost for the season with 6 games left and was probably the real #1 receiver for the team, and Bortles has had his problems, but he's got the thing you want most in a QB, which is courage to be within the moment at the crucial junctions of games.

I'm not saying Telvin Smith will ever be on Derrick Brooks' level but Telvin Smith seems to have many similarities to Brooks as a player.  Great 5th Round pick by Dave Caldwell.  

 

As much criticism as the Jaguars received for the Eugene Monroe trade,  if you get results in the 5th Round like Telvin Smith is providing,  it goes along way in reinforcing the long term plan of the Jaguars brass.

D6 this is one criticism of Caldwell I'll never understand.

 

You're sitting a quarter of the way into a season with an above-average LT and a young guy who you think will develop into a better LT.

 

The above-average LT doesn't want to resign with your team after the season. Do Caldwell traded him, and netted us long term studs at Will and CB (Telvin and Colvin).

 

If he hadn't, as so many people seem to wish, the best case scenario is you have an above-average LT at one spot and a young guy with more upside out of position, AND you might not have one or both of Telvin or Colvin. The worst case, and more likely scenario, is that you have neither Monroe, Telvin, nor Colvin.

 

Caldwell looked at the long term future of this franchise and made a smart and responsible investment. If Joeckel develops as he should then it will be like nothing ever happened... except we gained two cornerstones for our defense.

Not only that, but those picks netted from the Monroe trade also gave us the flexibility to deal up for Robinson and Linder.

Its too early to truly tell but I think it is the best draft class in Jaguars history.

Telvin Smith's performance in the second half of the year has blown my expectations out of the water.
