Quote:Hopefully, this is a step in the Chargers remaining in San Diego for the long term and that no NFL franchise moves again.

Not surprising, since LA doesn't seem to have the facilities available for a team to be able to play in 2015.
I guess something could be thrown together if/when a future stadium plan is finalized. Until then I don't see a team moving.

I think that what you mentioned is a major part of the equation.
Sam Farmer, the LA Times football writer, who is on top of the NFL situation with LA as much as anyone, now believes that it's unlikely that the NFL will have even one team in LA for the 2015 season. Basically, Farmer mentioned that he believes Chargers owner Dean Spanos wouldn't have given up the potential 2015 LA option, if he thought it was still viable.

The issue is still the stadium. No team is going to be allowed to move to LA without a stadium deal in place and shovels moving dirt. That was never going to happen with the Chargers. That is why the Rams always seem to be the most likely team. Their owners owns that huge plot of land in Hollywood Park. If a stadium gets built in LA, it will be there and it will be for the Rams. When that happens, who knows.

Ultimately, I think what will probably decide if 1, 2, or all 3 of these teams end up moving out of their current markets is the type of stadium deal that their current markets offer. If it involves a sizeable amount of public money, which will have to be approved by a ballot measure and/ or a State Legislature, St. Louis, San Diego, and Oakland are in serious danger of losing their NFL team.
The stadium is a dump. If Kroenke builds a stadium in LA, I would not be surprised to see the Chargers move there as well and have a share plan similar to the Jets/Giants.

What you mentioned certainly is a realistic possibility,
At the very least, the Chargers are very concerned about one or more NFL teams ending up in Los Angeles. Especially since around 25 % of their ticket base is from the Los Angeles area and Los Angeles is considered a Secondary Market for the Chargers, Unless San Diego steps up with a first rate stadium plan, the Chargers will likely be on the move.
I could very well see the Chargers moving still. No one is going to move to LA until something is in stone and proven to be happening. It would be weird to me to see the Rams and Chargers sharing the unit but it very well could happen.
Im still not sold on the raiders moving for some reason.

There's speculation out of Los Angeles that the Chargers are working with AEG to be partners for a Downtown Los Angeles Stadium.
Based on what was mentioned by LA Radio Host Fred Roggin which I'll provide in the link below, San Diego Chargers fans have plenty to be concerned about.
A major obstacle for the Raiders to get a new stadium in Oakland is the cost factor. Especially, since the Davis' aren't as wealthy as most NFL owners. The decision by Oakland could easily come down to a stadium for the Raiders vs. a stadium for the A's. It doesn't seem like the Davis' want to be the 2nd team in the 49ers stadium in Santa Clara. It's possible another community in the SF-Oak. Bay area will step up in getting a stadium built for the Raiders. But I'm not aware of any specific discussions for this to become a reality.
When all of the dust settles, the NFL might take the approach that because there's a team in the SF-Oak-San Jose Area ( 49ers ), it would be better if that area had only one team than if St. Louis and/ or San Diego didn't have a team. Of course that's a horrible scenario for Oakland Raiders fans but it's a scenario that seems like a realistic possibility.

I think you may find this interesting D6. Apparently the Chargers and Raiders are currently exploring a joint stadium venture for a 1.7 billion dollar privately funded stadium in Carson, CA which is 15 miles outside of LA. Also apparently they have already purchased the land for the stadium.

Thanks, knarnn. I saw this story in the last 45 minutes and was surprised to say the least.
Some questions come to mind that I don't think anyone knows the answers:
1. What happens if one, not both of these teams gets a new stadium in their current market? Does the Carson stadium possibility still exist for the other team?
2. If the Chargers and Raiders both move to Carson, one of them likely will go into the NFC. Which one? What other team ( s ) would change divisions?
3. How does Rams owner Stan Kroenke react to this news? Does Kroenke decide to go rogue, moving the Rams to Inglewood, CA. in the coming weeks, without NFL permiisson? In essence, making a claim to the Los Angeles market before any other team does?
