Protect the QB or protect yourself from opposing qbs (de or cb).
Quote:I don't understand everybody saying we need DE's. From what I've been reading a good majority of people are calling for the jags to draft a de. I look at team like the jets that built up that defensive line year after year it looks great but it will hurt you in the long run. Our d-line is the only constant thing we've had all year. I think the major focus for FA and the draft should be what we truly need to fix our godawful o-line and adding to the secondary. McCray is looking good and Colvin is looking promising but both safetys are looking rough. I love Cyprien I'm still rooting for the guy but he has not been playing to his potential, and Evans hasn't been looking great. if we can bring in some talent to help out those positions we could do big things. What do you think? Agree, don't care, or I'm a fool

Clemons is getting old.  He was never meant to be a long term fixture.  Same with Red Bryant.  Branch isn't very good unless they stunt him inside every time he's on the field.  The only guy we have on the line who is a long term guy is Marks.  I don't know if they'll resign Tyson, but I'd think they will.  He won't cost much and he plays his position decently enough (not a popular opinion on this board).  Ryan Davis is hopefully a bright spot but hasn't gotten the every down playing time to prove it.

That's why you see people talking about taking a DE in the first round, and it's not a stupid idea.  Honestly there are so many holes that I don't think they can go wrong with ANY position in the first round.
Yeah, it's a need. And even if it weren't - if there was a player on the board would could make a Von Miller kind of impact as a LEO, I'd take him pretty quickly.

We may have to draft a DE cause Clemons is old obviously. First need would be FS, not sure if their is a stud. Second need is ILB, third, RT, then probably DE.

We don't need a DE?  You always need to keep adding DEs.

Especially with the age and injuries of ours.

No position is ever "set."  You're always bolstering them all, both those that need fixing and those who are "set"... because tomorrow they won't be any more.

Wow so Andre Branch goes out for 5 weeks and everybody forgets about him

We have a great young LEO pass rusher right there. Clemons is supposed to rotate with him

OP is right that we need a safety (Collins/Prewitt) and our pick of the litter of offensive tackles (Peat would be a boring first round pick, but ultimately a good one especially if we ended up trading down)

We'll get another year or two of Clemons and Bryant, we can't handle another year or two of safeties giving up good plays on a defense that should be shutting teams down
As to the comment about Andre Branch on stunts -- it's a pass rush, dude. It doesn't matter how you do it, if you're crazy athletic and can just fly through gaps to the QB that still makes you a good/disruptive player. He gets his sacks by juking out blockers and being a good finisher in pursuit -- what's wrong with that? That's the whole job of the LEO, to be the wildcard pass rusher that can come at you in ways you're not used to defending.

How has Branch established himself as "great"? Is he good enough to be part of a good rotation? Definitely. But I'm not passing on a great pass rusher because Andre Branch is on the roster.

And you admit right in your post that Clemons may have another year of effectiveness after this season. Perfect transition period to get a young LEO in the draft, ease him in, and have him take over in 2016.

Right. In a perfect world you draft the replacement a season or two before you actually need him.
When your sack leader is a DT, it's a pretty good sign that you could upgrade your edge rushers.

And your best pass rusher is 33

Wait, did you just refer to Andre Branch as a "great young Leo"?

....srs?

LOL - Andre Branch is a rotational guy at best and some people on here think he's great...
I think JJ Watt today showed us a DE is still an obvious need.

Or steroids, one or the other
Naw we don't need a pass rusher. The op is right.

We are fine. We need a punter. Amy big legs out there this year?

Just how does he play every down and still be fresh in the 4th quarter?

This is true. Getting to the QB is the goal. How one does it is not particularly important.

However Andre Branch has three sacks in eight games, projecting to six in a full season. Not exactly the production you want from your primary pass rush position.
