It's all in the name of science; to examine the origins of our solar system and, perhaps, to verify if earth's water originated from comets.
This comet was selected because it comes around every 6 and a half years and is reachable. It's simply a stunning achievement.

Good news it is accomplished it's package of planned experiments for going into sleep. As it gets closer to the sun it could come back online.
And I believe they were able to get samples to analyze.
