Quote:The guys hired might not be the #1 guys on Marrone list but I'd be surprised if he didn't at least give them the okay before hiring.
this, Marrone has so much respect and trust in Coughlin I think he is jus following Coughlins lead more less. He know the success TC has had and I'm sure he wants SB/champion coaches which is what Tom is bringing in
Could be coaches speak but I doubt Marrone would have given this statement if he wasn't fully on board with the hire, he would have just let Coughlin announce it if that was the case:

“Pat Flaherty is a Super Bowl winning coach and teacher and I could not be more excited to welcome him to our staff,” Jaguars Head Coach Doug Marrone said in a statement. “With over 35 years of coaching experience, Coach Flaherty brings a wealth of knowledge to the offensive line room and will help develop our group into a tough, physical unit, which will be key to our success for this year and for years to come.

“As I have mentioned before, building through the trenches will be a key for our team going forward, and with the addition of Pat, we are making a major step in the right direction in that area.”

Its early days but I'd say that's what's up. Plus its not like these guys are scrub coach's Coughlin is hiring here, they are top of the range position coachs who have won super bowls.
Quote:Why?
Superbowl winning experience for one thing.
Quote:Greg Olson is available
read the quote better, I said better lol

Jags winning this offseason for sure no doubt! LETS GO!
Quote:Marrone seems tough enough to get his word in there and demand approval.
It's his coaching staff. I can't imagine he'd let TC steamroll him on the selection of it.
Exactly. This notion that he's just sitting back letting Coughlin tell him who his staff will be is silly.

I hope that it is. I started to get a
little concerned after two of Coughlin's former assistants were brought on.
Still -- I've seen nothing from Marrone to suggest he'd just sit back and let TC hire his staff in a manner that doesn't align with his own judgment.
I'm still assuming they are collaborating effectively at this point.
Whether the two guys worked for Coughlin before or not -- their experience is unassailable.

I would imagine is goes something like this:
Marrone: How about Pat Flaherty? You know him, can you get him in here to talk to us? I know he'd take your call.
TC: Sure. I'll call him.

Neither of Tom's former assistants were bad hires. If Tom has a list of options he brings to the table, and Marrone objects, I'm sure he's not force fed the hire. This notion floated earlier in this thread that Tom is somehow hiring a staff that won't work for Marrone so that he can fire the coach and take over is utter nonsense. The goal is to build the best staff possible that Marrone can work with. Neither of them will be successful if they don't.
Marrone does have experience in building his own staff, but I'm betting Coughlin's network is a heck of a lot more expansive. Nothing wrong with tapping those proven resources to build his coaching team.
Quote:Hiring assistant coaches has a lot to do with the good-old-boys network. I'm sure Coughlin adds a lot more connections, some of whom (like Decamillis and Fewell) are improvements over the best candidate Marrone knows.
Marrone himself is part of the Parcells tree, there's no reason to think he and Coughlin would disagree on these people.

Agreed.
My only concern wasn't with the hires themselves - I was simply worried that the dynamic between Marrone and Coughlin could become less than ideal if Marrone was simply deferring to Coughlin repeatedly.
I don't believe that to actually be the case currently, I just don't want it to happen. I'd prefer some checks and balances to a dictator situation.

I get the sense that Coughlin wants to be seen in Jacksonville like Elway in Denver, successful both on the field and in the FO. That sets his intentions to getting the best staff and players in place, not doing it all himself.
If I remember correctly.. Wasn't the giants o-line awful both years they won the superbowl? I could be wrong but I remember Eli getting smacked around a lot.

I believe they were pretty banged up, but I remember almost every OL that came through that team wound up being pretty solid. even if they went onto other teams and didnt live up to that.

I don't remember "awful." I remember them giving up some pressure though.
I believe in one of this postseasons they were forced to start a rookie guard or center due to injury. Not positive on that though.
