LOL
Ryan Leaf had a 45.3% completion percentage and a 39.0 passer rating in year 1 ---- 2 TDs & 15 Ints
Bortles has a 63.5% completion percentage and a 68.3 passer rating -- 6 TDs and 12 ints
The difference is that Bortles is solid and just needs to fix the picks (like bradshaw, favre, manning, etc). Leaf was just terrible all around.
I'm impressed by all the rosy optimism around here, and i'm usually one of them, but dang the kid has played poorly. I know all the excuses out there for him, and many make sense, but am i the ONLY one a bit concerned. If you look at the stats for many of the up and coming QBs, they didn't look this bad at all. I still think he'll end up being a good one, but i guess i'm a bit more skeptical than most. It seems as if he's a guaranteed franchise QB around here, i'm not ready to take that leap.
I really hope he throws in a few solid games soon to bring me around.
Go Bortles and Go Jags!
Quote:If people want to compare this season to the likes of Manning and Bradshaw....which is stupid, don't forget to include some busts also like Ryan Leaf.
Anyway, I highly doubt he gets to 20. I think we'll see more conservative playcalling before that happens.
Except Bortles doesn't blow up on teammates and members of the media. He also isn't a would-be master thief.
forget ryan leaf. just look at the early careers of almost every guy who fizzled out in the first 3 years. not saying that will be Bortles, but the statistical comparisons are pointless and need to end. he will be what he will be.

Overall he hasn't played poorly. Obviously the high number of interceptions stand out, and the pick 6's magnify those, but on the whole, other than the Miami game, and the picks against the Browns he has pleyed pretty well

Careful, dude....you're using logic around here
I think he'll play so amazingly awesome that the NFL will actually take some of the INT's away at the end of the year

I don't think it will get conservative. Otherwise, teams will start loading the box again and force us to go back to being aggressive
He'll get to 27 and then stop throwing the ball. Running plays from there on in, regardless of the number of games left.
Actually I am afraid he starts thinking about them. How could he not? Hope he doesn't get tentative.
He makes first downs - and that's the sign of a promising QB.

I agree. Its refreshing watching a Jags QB taking shots. He'll learn when he can and can't attempt to make something happen.
Under Mularky, Gabbert and Henne were told to play it safe, and that led to check down after check down. Is that what we want to return to?

Fixin the picks means fixin decision making, improving ability to read coverages, red zone efficiency, and 'smart-gambling'. The pro's you see who are great at this put in a lot of time outside the field, is Bortles ready for that?

Exactly! We'll find out soon enough. I really really hope he's the guy. People around here seem to be (understandably) so desperate for a franchise QB that they are already crowning the kid. He looks the part, but has a loooong way to go. I think he can do it, but it will come down to some serious dedication on Bortles part. I really hope he's up for it.
The next 8 games he will throw about 8 more interceptions he will have a couple games with none and once he learns how to read defenses better he will stop throwing him. I just hope he stays under Manning 28 INT his rookie year. If so thats a win for me. He will take the offseason to learn and he will come out next season firing balls all over the places for huge gains and TD!

Agreed.Once the light turns on for Blake, the future begins.
Quote:Agreed. We finally have a QB who has the gunslinger mentality. He's not afraid to take chances. As he matures as a player, the expectation is that the mental mistakes will dissipate.
I appreciate the 'gunslinger' mentality (I guess...); but what I think I want to see from our young quarterback is what (for lack of my ability to better express myself) I would call 'cautious aggression'. I still want to see aggressiveness from our quarterback... but want it tempered with a little bit more caution too. I want to see him going down field and not just an endless stream of 'Lee for 4 yards'.... having said that however, I don't want him trying to make plays so hard that he ends up making bad plays. The 'phins game was a classic example; remove those pick six's and fumble in the red zone and we win that game. Blake just needs to cool his jets a little until he has a better grasp of the elements around him... then he will know when he should change into 'gunslinger' mode or ride in 'game manager' mode. Right now, I think his 'default' setting is 'gunslinger'. He needs to change that to 'manager' with the option to go 'gunslinger'.
That's what I think anyway... but what the 'heck do I know?
He just needs to learn the coverages and call the correct checks downs and he will be fine. I see him trying to fit the ball into windows he did in college and it not working as often. He will learn when and where to make those throws
Don't be surprised if he throws a couple on Sunday. The Bengals' strength on D is in the secondary. Their front 7 has been pretty bad though, so maybe we'll be turning to the run.
I'm caught off guard by something every week though - so maybe he has a perfect passer rating and our running game gets held to 50 yards.
Quote:I'm not so much worried about the number of interceptions. We all knew he'd have his struggles this year. I just hope he starts to show that he's learning from the bigger mistakes.
I figure he's good for at least 24 INT this year. That's fine as long as we start to see him turn the corner at some point.
This, I'm just waiting for his "got it" game to kick in. It's going to click at some point in the season, he looks so close.
Quote:Check these stats out -- TERRY BRADSHAW Interceptions ....

HALL OF FAME
THERE IS NOT A CREDIBLE (i.e. national website) LIST OUT THERE THAT DOESN'T HAVE BRADSHAW IN THE TOP 20 BEST QBS EVER.
4 superbowl rings. Stats are not everything
