Small correction. They have it 5) Oregon and 6) Alabama.

I'm a little surprised.  I would have thought they'd try to spread it out among the conferences.  Although all those SEC teams still have to play each other so they'll fall.  And I'm sure conference champions will get a boost for after winning the championship games.  So if this were the last week and Oregon was playing a conference championship game against a team in the top 15 while Ole Miss was sitting at home, I wouldnt be surprised if Oregon's win would bump them ahead.

 

I will say though, if the committee does believe those 4 SEC West teams are that good, why should a loss to each other hurt them?  You'd be setting the precedent that beating "solid" teams is better than losing to good ones.  

It's pretty clear their two criteria are 1) Record and 2) Quality wins

 

Record is clearly #1 because FSU is ahead of the SEC teams with tougher schedules and better wins (according to committee rankings)

 

Mississippi State has beaten Auburn and FSU has beaten Notre Dame

 

Auburn has beaten Kansas State and LSU

Ole Miss has beaten Alabama

Oregon's best win is Michigan State

Alabama's best win is West Virginia

 

That means that FSU has a good shot as a 1-loss team as long as Notre Dame and Clemson win out. Oregon controls their own destiny because you won't have three 1-loss SEC teams all with better wins than Michigan State. Too much playing each other.

 

A 2-Loss SEC team will NOT make the playoffs. All the undefeated teams are ahead of all the 1-loss. Almost all the 1-loss teams are ahead of all the 2-loss. The exceptions, East Carolina and Duke, have played ridiculously weak schedules including no one in the top 25 of their poll.

 

Clearly prior reputation and the eye-test aren't as important looking at Alabama being behind Oregon. I hope to see a lot of movement week to week after teams get quality wins. So far, I like that they didn't echo the polls and their internal logic seems to be consistent.

Wny don't they give priority to the top team in each conference? I don't think Michigan State, TCU, and Oregon need to be in there right now, but three SEC teams in it is saying any one-loss team in that conference is better than a one-loss team in any other conference.

Because, Jaguarwoman, just because youre a top team in yourn conference doesn't mean you should get in. What if the MAC or Sunbelt was undefeated? Either way, losing to Va Tech will haunt OSU not matter how much they try to justify it

I am not complaining about OSU being left out. MSU is the best team in the Big Ten now. But if one-loss teams are going to be included, they should not all come from the same conference.

This is about picking the four best teams. If they all come from one conference, or the B1G has none, then so be it.

I just think if three teams are in the SEC, the reason is SEC bias. What makes them better than the one-loss teams in other conferences?

Have you looked at who is picking the top 4 teams?  If you did (google), you can see that there shouldn't be a lot of SEC bias here.  

 

I don't think they got it right.  I don't think Miss St should be top 4, but because of their Alabama win, they gave it to them.

 

Edit:  I think they looked at the future and they know this was all going to sort itself out.  It's why they did it the way they did.

Ole Miss had Alabama which the committee felt was more impressive than Oregon over Michigan St.  Both of those are more impressive than Auburn over Kansas State...BUT

 

Auburn//Ole Miss losses are "better" than Oregon to Arizona at home.

 

But the whole "SEC Bias" will solve itself...

So the SEC teams in the "top 6" each play each other twice....

I agree about the eye test, and appreciate that. ND and Ohio St are ranked much to high in the AP/Coaches polls. The playoff committee got it right on those two.

Why? It is entirely possible to be one of the top four teams in the country and not win the conference.
