I don't post often, especially the last few years.  I've been having a hard time believing again.  The recent post making fun of the company lines over the years spoke directly to me.  Thank you for that post, you've forced me to consider how I feel about being fooled.

 

I, for one, believed in Gene Smith and Vic.  Hook, line, sinker, I bought it all.  I loved feeling like we could find small school talent that the other teams missed, and I liked having exciting jars on the shelf that would prove our process right.  

 

In fact I was even fooled before that. I remember being excited about "track star" Alvis Whitted.  I remember discussing excitedly with friends the project receiver Matt Jones.  I remember the videos of Byron Leftwich at Marshall being carried by his linemen and thinking, now that's a QB.  

 

I was 12 when Jacksonville was awarded a franchise.  I still have the full color Times-Union paper with that original helmet on it.  Back then I didn't know much about football, barely understood how the divisions were laid out. In those summers every day's training camp reports would be sprawled out and I would read about each player and root for my favorites to make the final roster.

 

I've never rooted for other teams, when playing fantasy football I always overdraft jaguars (and often only jaguars) just so I don't have to have split loyalties when watching.

 

Every year I watch the draft and imagine each player as a pro bowler for years to come.  The GMs on every team do a similar thing, they want to find players that will contribute for years.  

 

As the years have gone by and all of the preseason all-stars fade out it's been very tempting to give in and just be cynical about it.  You're right I got duped, Vic and Gene told a wonderful story, I thought the Weavers wouldn't sell, I wanted to hope.  I haven't let myself believe in Dave yet, he doesn't tell me a story, I feel like he drafts in line with ESPN because the Jaguars want to change their image.

 

When you wrote about the years of optimism turning sour and advocated being a real analyst and not buying the company line, it forced me to realize the following:

 

I don't come to the jaguars.com message boards looking for the truth.  I'm here looking for my people, the ones that also fall in love with every player on this roster and want to believe.  Not because it's the truth, but because we are fans, and fans are supposed to have hope.  You forced me to realize that cynicism was winning... During the recent victory it was the final few minutes and we were up by a large margin, and I thought... somehow we'll lose this.  Forget that.  Being truthful about the direction of the Jaguars is not a healthy way to approach this hobby.  Super bowl or bust!

Welcome back, and I agree with you. I love my jaguars, and I'll never lose faith in them. Some posters on this board have [BLEEP] burgers (aspergers), so cynicism is their game.


The record isn't indicative of it, but the team is headed in the roster. I'm being patient, especially with the potential of Bortles, and other young players on the roster. They call it lack of talent, I call it lack of experience.

I here you Andy. I have been with the Jags the day they were awarded the franchise. I went to the old Gator Bowl for the pep rally and watched Wayne Weaver land in the helicopter at midfield. I went straight to a both and bought 2 season tickets down payments  about as soon as you could get them.I believe that was November 1993.

 

So I have been through it all. This year I have really been a critic of the team. I though we had a great defense with a very young offense. I expected scores to be 16-10 like scores not the blow outs we were getting.

 

We seem to have righted the ship a little but it could blow up just as fast as it got better. I am very anxious to see if Bradley is a real coach. We will see by the end of the year

Who else has Asperger's syndrome? I thought I was the only one. And I never considered myself a cynic.

 

I assume you mean "right direction." No doubt we are. Progress must come slowly, but good things happen to those who wait.

 

The "lack of talent" argument never made any sense to me. That means the player can't get any better with age and experience. When one of 11 players is a free agent, there is no such thing as a lack of talent on offense, only a lack of experience.

I am 27 years old. I've been a Jacksonville Jaguars fan since I was a child in the first grade. I love the Jaguars and have so many memories of the games as a kid. I will continue to enjoy them as I grow older and eventually DIE.

 

Come here all you'd like and "tell-us-so". It's seriously fine by me. I'm not going to turn against something that I grew to love all because the team has gone through a lot in the last decade or so.

 

The team is still young enough for us to watch the original Jaguar greats get drafted, play a long career, and retire. I don't own stock in the team and I sure as hell don't make executive decisions, nor would they even

entertain my opinions. You know why?

 

Well, because I work for the military bomb squad and I don't talent scout from my living room couch watching NCAA games on a Saturday in my underwear.

 

I'm actually kind of glad you don't care about the Jaguars anymore. I really hate when someone bad mouths something they have no control over. Make fun of the people here if that pleases you, but like me they are all here for the ride, and please forgive us if always having a positive outlook on a terrible situation really offends you. I feel for you and what has happened in your life to give you such emotion.

Good post.  Also to consider is that some of the whining bandwagon group would have you believe that the Jaguars are the only team to ever have lean years.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  There were times when some of the currently most successful franchises went through similar spells.  By and large you stay hopeful.  It's not about being fooled or taken advantage of, it's about wanting your team to be successful.

I totally understand where you're coming from...but sheesh, you people like to type a lot!!!

Not only that, there have been teams with worse spells.

Thanks for the support, fellas.  Here's hoping Aaron Colvin will come in and make an impact by season's end, and that Jeremiah George will be so inspired by Gus-y Robbins' speeches that he'll fight his way onto active roster, etc, etc.
