Quote:I thought it still should have been an easy TD. Hoyer was on the move, yes....but still think an NFL QB should be making that play for the TD.

The defense game planned to stop the run and dared Hoyer to beat them. He couldn't.

The Jaguars defense has quietly settled down the last 3 weeks. Allowing 13.0 pts/game, fewest in the NFL over that span.

That's awesome. Go jags
I'm encouraged that they are playing with more discipline, but one game at a time.

I'm not crowning them until this young defense (young at the second level and back end, where the problems have been) can prove they've truly turned the corner.

We won the turnover game and made key stops, two things they haven't been doing.  That was the difference.

They need to keep up the work and string together good performances.

Had they played like this all season, we could have had another couple wins.  Steelers most certainly.

Quote:This is now 3 straight weeks. It's odd, we held both the squealers and the tacks to 10 and 16 points yet people on the board were still complaining about how bad our D is. With 3 straight weeks of solid performances, I think we can all agree now that the defense is playing better. Where you at TMD and bartramspringsihatelife?
If I had to pin it to one guy that has made the difference its Telvin Smith.

I mean sure Poz has played great all season, along with Cyprien, Big Red, Clemons, Marks,

but on the same hand still huge weakness with Josh Evans (as he almost let up a huge touchdown on a whiff)..

and Cbs are average to below.
Defense is starting to pull together, now enter Colvin.. Can't wait to see what this youngin' can do..

I mean...it's really been 4 straight games of good to very good defense. The below tweet shows PFF and fantasy points given up for the first 3 vs the next 3 (Browns not included). Take them for what it's worth but it shows remarkable improvement across the board really. Then as he said in the bottom two, those numbers are improving even more...and the signs were already there before this week.

You can add +8.5 for run D and +3.1 for pass rush. Don't have the others offhand but will note them when I do.

As if we needed any proof the Bartram guy is a trolll. He spends all Sunday on this board after a loss. Didn't even log in yesterday.

I like the progress.  However, I also consider the opposition.

The Browns in particular, IMO were very overrated and to me their "success" seems like a lot of smoke and mirrors.  I never believed they were as good as their apparent performances.  Titans are the Titans.  Steelers are hot and cold.  Browns held them to only 10, and Ravens nearly shut them out.

The biggest difference was turnovers and key stops.  This was the first week they won those battles.  Had they been winning those battles earlier, we'd probably have a couple more wins.

Agree.

If he steps in healthy he could be an impact player for us.

Our D has also played exceptionally well in the redzone. Regardless though, 3 straight weeks of consistent play is a good sign.
That's three good games for the defense now and I think everyone can accept that we've made progress.

Perhaps the question we want to ask is why ?

Is it down to improvement from rookies ? Or new players generally "gelling" with existing ones ? Or a change in defensive strategy ? Or is it just growing confidence ?

I think it's got to be a combination of those factors and I think you have to throw the Bortles Factor in there too. There is no doubt he's given a lift to the team.
I am proud of Abry Jones.  He is helping this Dline.

Gus Bradley explained it today at his press conference. Strategy has nothing to do with it and it certainly is not a coincidence.

The Bortles factor was not even close to what the defense did. It was actually his worst game. The defense bailed him out.

I'm not saying it was Bortles performance in this game which lifted the team. But I think his energy and positivity has lifted the team since he was called into action.

On offense, certainly. But how does that help the defense?

Having a functioning offense takes the pressure off the defense and having someone like that in the team must give everyone a bit of confidence and an extra spring in their step. I don't believe it's a coincidence that the defense started performing (aside from the Chargers game they've kept a tight grip on the opposition) once Bortles got into the side.
This defense has played much better and agree that it's becoming a trend.  I am very curious to see how this defense will play against a QB like Luck.  The front 4 has just been a beast for this team.

I think progress is keeping an average team to below 20 points in today's NFL.  Everybody has talent, so no matter what NFL team we play - if we keep them scoring 13ppg in the last 3, that's impressive.

We're not going to do that playing the Colts or Packers or Broncos..... but lets be real, nobody stops them.

Even the 49ers got LIT UP last night for 42 and could've easily been 50+ if the Broncos didn't let go of the gas.  And looking at the players the 49ers have, they are lightyears ahead of us (yes, even with their injuries and suspensions).

I like the progress.  We're not there yet, so I don't expect us to keep Andrew Luck to <14 points when we play them.

Yep, this was a great point. We will give up 30 to the Cowboys and Colts in a few weeks (because they score that much on everyone) and the boards will be right back to hating on the D, Bradley, Babich, etc.
