Quote:Keep in mind that in their previous five games, the Browns had never failed to score fewer than 21 points.  We held them to 6.

Well done!

This just needed repeating, especially since the Browns aren't considered a "real team" apparently. I failed to realize that only fake teams consistently score at least 21 points per game and have a top 3 rushing attack.
My enthusiasm is tempered.  The browns had key injuries which are part of the NFL but are a factor week to week.  Based on stats and me not seeing the game, is the defense improved?  Yes and I hope that trend continues.

Since the SD game when we last made changes to the defense for poor performance we've allowed an average of:

309 yards a game (roughly 3rd in NFL)

226 passing ypg (roughly 11th)

83 rushing ypg (roughly 5th)

13 ppg (roughly 1st).

Rankings based off our past 3 performances to just current NFL rankings based on the season.

Against a top 10 offense, mid tier offense, and a bottom tier offense.

Quote:The D-Line was stifling.  The browns O shot themselves in the foot plenty, but the Jags D was relentless nonetheless. The browns may have made them look slightly better than they were  at times, but there was still a nice step forward taken on the defensive side of the ball by the Jags today.

Quote:Lets keep in mind it was against a guy who is arguably a backup caliber QB in the NFL. Hoyer missed Cameron for an easy score and another scoring opportunity as well.

I am happy with where our defense is heading, but we aren't there yet.

I side with the above.

Yesterday was certainly a step in the right direction.

The Browns did leave plays on the field however.
I'm probably nit picking...but Josh Evans has to take better angles, he's getting killed in the open field.  I'd say it was actually elite every where else on defense yesterday

Josh Evans is a backup forced to start.

Don't all teams every week for the most part?

Sen'Derricks best buddy
I nominate this thread as one of the best ever. On a message board where many fans criticize players, coaches, and the general manager, I am only reading praise even from the Debbie Downers. It's such a good feeling to have a hard time finding something we did wrong, especially on a defense that was ranked dead last in September.

Gus Bradley talked about how we got better every week and everything came together Sunday. He added we had fun out there. I think that was both the cause and effect of how well everyone played. Bradley only had good things to say about the defense until someone asked him about losing Poz for the year. Even then he said although it is a big loss, we will be OK without him.

For those who are not very excited because the Browns helped us, think about this: No team ever wins a game without getting some help from the opponent. Every team has injuries. All coaches make bad decisions. Even All-Pro and HOF caliber players help their opponents sometimes. You are crazy if you think just because our opponent was the Browns, we should not get excited.

Game balls go to Telvin Smith, Paul Posluszny, and the entire defensive line.

Three games of quality defensive efforts is a trend.  Granted, they weren't playing the Broncos, Packers, or a high octane offense but its a step in the right direction.  With Poz and Branch going down thats a huge blow, but I guess we will see how good the "next man up" is.

I hate that excuse myself. The "it was just the Browns." Look who the Browns beat and how well they've played offensively this year. This was a huge win for us against a team that was playing very well and on a huge morale high.

We have the Cowboys, Colts, and Ravens coming up. If we play against those four teams like we did yesterday, all of the "It was the Browns" excuses will go to the graveyard.
I think "progress" this year would be beating one of following:

Colts, Cowboys, @ Ravens, @ Bengals

and then beating a few others like the Fish, Texans, Titans...

That would give us 5 wins this year....

We should be glad they didn't play Johnny Football, if he'd been in the lineup we would've lost by 30!  Ninja

Progress means what we have been seeing recently. It is not about who we beat, but how we win the game.
