I thought he in fact was successful at some point prior to arriving there. Wasn't he good for a time in San Diego or am I thinking of someone else?

No. Aside from the first two Carolina defense loaded with veterans like Kevin Greene, Eric Davis, Sam Mills and Lamar Lathan his defenses were terrible.
