Quote:It was bad, IMO.   It just wasn't terrible and you've gotten too accustomed to terrible so you don't see that it's still bad.   Just my suspicion of your perspective  - you're certainly entitled to believe it wasn't bad.  I think it was.

Still - it's a ridiculously young line, and I think they'll get better.  And it's the run blocking that has the most work to do. The pass pro will likely be serviceable as the season chugs along. (slowly and  uphill)

What evidence do we have it is going to get better? Certainly hasn't gotten better since last year. Or the year before. Or before that year, so on and so on.

It'll get better with more experience.. Too many rooks on offense.. Hate to use the old cliche, but it's a truthful one.. Once the game starts to slow down for these rooks, they'll be fine..

Just be "patient," we're only four or five more drafts away from being competitive.

Speaking of comebacks, does anyone know what the biggest comeback in the history of the Jags is?

I don't offhand and just wonder what it was.

I have to assume it was Brunell who had it though, because other than DG, no other Jags QB was comeback material.
Quote:I asked Oesher this and he didn't anwer.  But when I do the math, 22 starters not including special teams, then only the first three or four rounds should you expect "real production."  That only leaves about three or four more drafts until they'll be competitive.
Haha.  Yeah - that's one way to look at it.  But obviously - when I say "build through the draft" I don't mean exclusively.  Surely you know that and are just throwing out some post loss jaded sarcasm.

If you analyze the depth chart realistically - the offense is largely in place and just needs time to mature. No major draft picks required. Maybe a mid round RB and  an early-ish TE.

If you analyze the Defense realistically - they need to draft a stud FS, two LB, and a pass rusher and give those guys time to grow.

I see that as really do-able.  That's 1 draft. Maybe 2 to acquire all of that.  Factor in FA and I can see them being in a lot of games next year.

When Gene Smith's late round picks were being cut under Gene, this board's mantra was "You shouldn't expect any player drafted after the 3rd round to even make the team."

Now we're told that 6th and 7th round draft picks, and UDFA's are going to be the long-term starters.

It all depends on what fits your agenda for how long it'll take for this team to be "productive."

Bowanko and Linder have flashed. It's just a really young line. If you prefer to think that Joeckel, Linder and Bowanko won't get better, that's fine. I think they will.  Seems reasonable to me that three O-linemen that have barely a dozen starts between them can improve.

Well, I hope that is true. However, this is the last organization I would ever put faith in.
Quote:I'm sick of this. Week after week. Same story. Losing. Blake did OK, but all those dropped passes was what made this game. We need someone on offense to be a difference maker

Yeah, who was the last play maker the Jags had on offense? MJD, in his prime?

Who other than MJD in the last several years?

Those key penalties when the Jags actually made a big play on offense really hurt too.

Today was just a combination of things all going wrong.

When I see things like this happen, it makes what's going on in Jacksonville that much more intolerable. Such a lack of inspired play, so little "flash". Apparently the Browns are the laughingstock of the league and they manage to give their fans some hope.
I thought it was a pretty good game. the defense played much better, and the offense is not nearly as painful to watch. I expect it to continue to improve over the course of the season. We held them to 10 points of offense, not bad at all. Offensively, we moved the ball better than with Henne, and Bortles shows signs of being very good. Hurns has regressed some, but we have some talent overall. Looks much better to me than the last few years.

Honestly... What did you expect from our first 5 games?

Steelers Colts Bolts Eagles could and should make the playoffs. Skins are the outsider here.

Our defense held the Steelers to 10 points with 7 coming from a pick 6. Starting 2 rookie WRs with no playmaking TE and no running game. I don't know about you guys but I was shocked it was this close.

It's all well and good to say, in hindsight, that they did better than you how you thought they would do before the game started. But they had a chance to pull off a win and the offence did nothing.

And what exactly does it say when expectations are so low that you're satisfied they kept it to 8 points? They didn't even cover the spread and we're supposed to be pleasantly surprised?

Yes... Rookie QBs are 2-14 against Lebeau. Do I like losing.... Of course not. No one does. But the people who are saying Blake is terrible and the coaches need to go have to relax.

Its totally cool to get upset when they lose but just know our schedule gets easier from here on out. We are gonna beat the tacks next week and all will be right. Blake will be better and the WRs will be better.

It says I am realistic? It says we haven't been good for years?

I didn't really expect for us to be in contention for a playoff spot. If we are not going to contend this year, my goal is to be in the best shape possible to contend next year. I am seeing signs that we have better players than we did last year.
This is definitely the lowest of lows for this fan base.  I think EVERYONE has had it.  We need to start winning or Bradley's head will be on a stick soon.

Quote:I like that they are committed to building through the draft.  It's how long term success is sustained.  It's just really, really hard to wait for it to pay off.

The problem is, at some point you have to hit on more than one or two picks.  If you can even say he's hit on one at this point.

I know it's only around a season and a half into things but typically you'd see at least some draft picks you can say are clearly good.  Who do we have that Caldwell has selected that we can say that about?  A safety?  Cyprien is all I can say.

He failed to put together a competent offensive line again.  His additions on defense are really paying dividends.  Toby Gerhart couldn't run for a first down if you gave him 5 tries.  Beadles? Yeah. Joeckel continues to fail to live up to his top 2 pick status.  He hasn't even looked like a first rounder thus far.  It's beginning to become a concern.

Don't even get me started on the coaching problems that we've seen.
It's funny because this is the first game that we were actually in it till the end and the fanbase implodes. It is going to take some time, everyone is learning if by the end of the season we don't see that improvement than we need a new coaching staff but right now as long as we start competing out there I am happy.
