Quote:I'm not saying we aren't bad, and that blowouts are acceptable. All I was getting at was that yes we have a bad team, but it IS getting better. That doesn't make blowouts acceptable, but a lot here act like nothing at all good happened yesterday. When a lot did. It's going to be a long season. I'd rather try to focus on the good. Not like us complaining will magically make the defense better.
I agree completely here.

The blown coverages that are leading to these blowout losses are NOT acceptable.

However, I'd say many of us saw the opening stretch of games where 3 of the first four were on the road, and we faced Foles, RG III, Luck and Rivers and knew that would be a tough stretch for the defense.

Even if the defense weren't blowing coverages, it would still have been a tough stretch for the defense.  It's possible those guys still would have put up good numbers and we would have lost regardless.

But the DL showed signs of life and did not quit.

The offense showed signs of competence, especially in the first half.

This game, the team had the look of one that is capable of putting up a good fight but can't quite respond to adversity yet.

Quote:I totally agree we have to play better. With that said some of the expansion teams had advantages we didn't (double draft picks, etc.) And in any case, it is not an exact analogy because our situation is different and we're going with such an agressive youth movement.

I dunno if it will pay off but given the scope of the changes, I'm not completely shocked at the results. Like most folks, I was expecting things to be a *little* better, but who knows how the rest of the year will play out?
I still think we get our first win within the next two games.
Complaining how long this team was losing games is not a fair assessment of the rebuilding process. No one would argue that two years ago when the rebuild started that the Jaguars had the worst roster in NFL. This was the result of drafting by a GM I do not need to mention as all Jaguar fans are aware who this was. No one expected this team to be even competitive in two years of drafting when almost every position need to be upgraded. Yesterdays game showed improvement by the D line stopping the run. It showed we have our franchise quarterback, It showed we have young receivers with potential. What it did highlight was that the secondary is so bad that it will prevent this team from winning games unless the play can be elevated. As for coaching I believe we are seeing a young head coach making mistakes that he will learn from. example.Going on fourth down early in the game on about the fifty yard line. You don't make that call playing against a quarterback like Rivers with a secondary like ours. Gus was lucky to escape with giving up three points. So here he gets aggressive at the wrong time to early in the game. Then at the end of the half with 59 seconds and a timeout was the right time to  get aggressive and try and get  in field goal position and he pulls the plug and runs out the clock. As for being out coached in the second half of games, It is very difficult to out coach another team after that coach has evaluated our secondary's rapping holes and exploits them in the second half. The opposing coach has a huge advantage and it results in the impression of being out coached in every game. This team is on track to become competitive in year three if we can correct the secondary problems through the draft and free agency. and isn't that what we all expected.

This hasn't been emphasized enough. 3 out of 4 opponents were all in the playoffs last year and at least 2 of the 3 are positioned to make a deep run this year. This has been a brutal opening stretch, and it hopefully should start getting easier in the next couple of weeks.
We've been outscored 152 to 58 this year.  That's why I also referenced last year because this year it's pretty much the same thing -- maybe worse.

Our average loss this year is 38 to 14

We've been outscored 87 to 17 in the 2nd half this year.  That's an average score of 22 to 4.   Oh, and 14 of our points were garbage time vs Indy when they were already beating us 30-0

Agreed. Honestly could see 2 wins.
Quote:We understand how bad the roster was. that's why the other GM and coaching staff was fired. The current GM and coach are supposed to make this roster better.

After 2 drafts and 2 FA periods, is this roster better than the roster that went 2-14? If yes, how can you tell? If not, why not?

I'll need the whole season to see if we improved since last year. I think we a have few things to take forward to keep us from being tottaly inept like we have been the last 5 years.

But that still remains to be seen. I'm just trying to find some glimmer of hope because if I don't look for that then when will continue down this path of lions and raider level of ineptitude we've now seen for some time. Bottle, cyp, the wideouts and dennard give me hope.
The 2013 team was historically bad but somehow managed to win more games than the competitive team that went 2-14 the year before. I think it was time to guy that roster.

Already have almost as many sacks?

Starting QB is different.

Many of the 2-14 players are unemployed now?
Quote:It called perspective. Once you really understand how bad the roster was when Caldwell took over it may make more sense. I see things to build around and think you hit it perfectly.

Hopefully they learn to be competitive this year

The problem isn't just how bad the roster was. It's that Caldwell made it worse by tearing spots that didn't need to be torn up. He also replaced them with mostly young guys without NFL experience. Look at the age of our offensive line (struggling unit). Look at the age of our secondary (struggling unit). We have one unit (DL) that has veteran experience...that's it.

Obviously the sacks haven't been helping.....

I said it a previous post, those veteran we're a solid 2-14 but competed. These young guys get blown out but went 4-12. Which one do you want. They both suck but I'll take the young guys. At least they have upside.
How can it be "knee-jerk" when we've seen it for an entire season plus 4 games already?

Simply asserting the team is getting better is worthless.

How are we getting better again? Name a few meaningful ways we are getting better.

Haven't won, aren't scoring points, can't stop anyone.... So I ask again - how are we getting better?

We are lucky we drafted Bortles because without him this team would be completely HOPELESS
Quote:Given the fact that we've been outscored 58-152 can the reactions here really be considered knee jerk?
agreed but given that was against phili indi and sandiego 3 probable playoff teams i think a little perspective is needed

the losses were unacceptable but i am certain the defecit will reduce as the season goes on

We are getting first downs and converting third downs. That's a start lol
Getting past half field lol
Quote:Disappointment in this team is anything but "knee-jerk".... I honestly can't remember the last game we didn't get blown out in.

If you think we were blown out in Philadelphia, you don't know what a blowout is.
Quote:How's this for Knee Jerk

Over the past 20 games in the Gus era, we've been outscored 601 to 300 ---- That's equivalent to losing by a score of 30 to 15 each game.
 That's pretty terrible.
