I'm not sure we have the talent to run Zone either.
Quote:I don't think the scheme is all the much to blame this week. Guy blew a coverage but other than that most of the big plays were just good plays. People like to say that Rivers found the open guy. Well in this case if you think back in the game try to remember how many times the ball was thrown to Keenan Allen. That wasn't on our scheme or Rivers finding the open man. That was all about Keenan Allan beating who ever was covering him. He was the best player on the field today.

So was Eddie Royal. He was just as dangerous.
Eddie Royal was the recipient of the blown coverage and had another big play. He wasnt targeted as much as Allen.

I have a feeling this problem will go away soon. Free agent to bes will see Bortles and want to sign with this team in the offseason

I wish it worked that way, I do, but that's not going to attract free agents.

Promise and established talent on both sides will.

We have Bortles and a literal sea of crap.
The scheme is similar to that in  seattle, but in seattle they run a lot more press coverage to disrupt the timing of the routes whether they drop into zone or run man under.  The biggest difference is that in either alignment, you are running a single high safety.  If the corner is technically playing deep third on the outside or straight man against the receiver is irrelevant because they don't have a dedicated safety to a half of the field as in cover two.  In seattle they have a kid named earl Thomas, who like Richard Sherman QB's don't like throwing at and when they do has the range to make plays on the back end.  I love Winston guys toughness and I like josh evans versatility, but they are a far cry from the prototype FS that you would want to run this scheme.

Their guys were running wide open all day long.

Unless I managed to see the only open player every play...

We don't. We're damned if we do and damned if we don't.

Eddie friggin Royal is not dangerous. We just suck and that leads to below average players being WIDE open.

No way in the world should Eddie Royal have 2 40yd tds.

We don't have the secondary to run zone or man. Our linebackers can't cover people either. Poz is only good on 1st and 2nd down. He can't play pass coverage which is why you see teams easily picking up 3rd and 8 or better.
Quote:Cause we don't have the talent to play man..
We dont have the talent to play zone really. Seems like it would benefit this trash just to tell the players to stick to their man instead of play a certain zone, because they're too stupid to dont it apparently.
We can't play zone.  We can't play man (see the Malcom Floyd TD).  This defense is hopeless and very vanilla.

There has to be something different.  We don't have the talent to play man.  We don't have the talent to play zone.  Can't Gus come up with a different defense like we do with positions (when we realize someone doesn't fit anywhere)?

Man D requires talent whereas Zone D requires communication.  Unfortunately, talent and communication are the weaknesses of this team.  Once we fix those, we should be ok.

Hopefully we'll see some improvement when they plug Colvin in, but just don't expect a miracle fix. And even IF Colvin turns out to be great, offenses will just exploit other weaknesses on this defense, and they won't have to look far, man or zone..
Quote:We're trying to re-evaluate everything and see which guys can take an opportoonity and finish strong in this scheme. I think the younger guys are having some mental errors, but overall they're doing a really great job. It's a challenge now... It's a challenge, but I have faith that our guys will keep working hard and they'll continue to get even better.
Coach, is that you?
I think Cyprien's coverage of Gates was something of an important development.

It showed overall he can cover TEs.  I hope the defense takes a similar approach to covering TEs in the future.

If we can just cut out  the blown coverages....ugh.

I can't be too mad at McCray.  He was in decent position.  Rivers just made a perfect throw.

I think the play where Royal wound up being covered by Geno Hayes was something in the scheme the Bolts saw on film, because that route took a long time to develop, and Royal came dang near all the way from the other side of the defense to exploit that.

But Winston Guy?  Ugh!

Big plays are definitely hard to swallow.  The again, when Rivers is on point he's fairly unstoppable.  I don't think any DB could have stopped that TD to Floyd in the back corner of the EZ.

Quote:Why are we playing so much zone if were trying to imitate seattle who run man the majority of the time?

Swag,

It really doesn't matter what coverage concept the Jags play, they don't pressure the passer on a consistent basis, don't have atheltic linebackers that shrink the field, and have gaping holes at the FS and CB positions. If the Jaguars played man they'd get eaten alive, this defense is lacking play makers in a major way.

If Cyp COULDN'T cover a 34 year old TE, id be worried..

Gates is still capable of doing damage.

Against Arizona, he had 6 catches for 81 yards.

Against Seattle (who we want to be when we grow up), he had 7 catches for 96 yards.

Gates was completely shot down by Buffalo, held to one catch for 8 yards.

He had 3 for 30 against us yesterday.

I have to give Cyprien credit for a good game, even if it was against a 34 year old TE.
