David Caldwell is absolutely on track. Show me a GM who has drafted more starters in the last two years. I don't know if you can.


The only knock I have on Gus is his questionable time management skills and his fumbling of the qb situation, but I'm willing to give him a pass on both accounts.

Why? I like the strategy. I think bortles just skyrocketed his chances for success.

 

If caldwell just picked a top 10 QB last year, Hes gonna have a nice long stay here at Jacksonville even if the rest of the team plays like trash. Im a believer in throwing draft picks/cap room at a group until it becomes a strength. Kinda like how we did with the WR position last 2 years. Expect Caldwell to do this with the O-line and secondary

Newsflash, this team has been god awful since 2008. 6 straight years of absolute trash.

Now don't be so harsh and insulting!!!! Calling the team trash is an insult to trash itself.

I agree that Andy Reid is a far better coach than Gus Bradley, but like the team Gus is inexperienced going into his 2nd year as a Head Coach in the NFL. That being said we shouldve seen improvements by now (which many argued we had towards the end of the season others argued it was wins that the teams we played didnt care about due to the draft).

It took him over two years to really improve upon the SeaHawks Defense, so I think he should be given one more year as the HC after Dave Caldwell is able to draft & sign more talent for him.  That being said I do want to see Gus at least get pissed off, like many of us fans are at the Defense....

Cyprien gets way too much love for doing basically nothing. He's not a playmaker or anything close to it. He's just not as bad as a Guy was. We drafted a whole secondary in the draft and only have one interception and is last in passing yards per game. That's bad general managing and coaching and we shouldn't be that bad in either of those categories. Only thing this regime has done right is draft Bortles. They're playing the front office and coaching like some rookies learning on the job and stinking it up. Just like the product that plays on Sundays.

But what were you expecting from a second round safety and third round corner a fifth round corner as sixth round safety and a seventh round corner in there second year?


Would you have perfered Mathis coming off a second ACL or Cox who is not on a team currently?

I guess what I'm asking is what would you have done differently with the same situation.

They actually kept Lowery he is just injury prone. He was on IR all last year lol. What would have done differently.

I would have kept Monroe and drafted Ziggy Ansah

Drafted a whole secondary?  Yes....every 6th and 7th rounder should be all pro.

So you would have kept the Monroe that getting ready to have knee surgery the same Ansah who has one sack this year and playing for a d-line that has totaled 8 so far?

I'm confused as to why people are shocked at us being a 3-13 to 4-12 team. Last year, this team was being considered as THE worst team in NFL history. You don't go from historically bad to .500 in one season. We have late round picks getting significant playing time. Telvin Smith was a 5th round pick for a reason. So was McCray and Josh Evans. Dakoda Watson was a guy who never did anything in Tampa. Why did anyone think he'd suddenly be good here? Reynolds went undrafted. When Caldwell got here he was literally just trying to add bodies. Next year is the measuring tool, NOT this year. This year is the team putting up with young talent and a ton of mistakes in the hopes they figure it out by the end of the year.

With offsides, poor tackling, big plays given up...every game so far and another 30+ point game , something is clearly wrong.

Is it coaching? Can someone give some insight? SMH is all I can do.


With that D and the porous OLine, the season is going downhill in a hurry.


Tampa went to Pittsburgh, played with pride and pulled one out. Something this team lacks.

Our defensive scheme is very similar to Seattle, but unlike Seattle, we don't have the talent level to execute that style defense. The problem is that rather than adjust our scheme to best utilize the talent we do have, Gus keeps trying to run the Seattle style. Result; leagues worst defensive record, 0-4 record, double digit loses.

 

The hope was that with Bortles behind center the defense would get more of a chance to rest than they were getting with Henne; and they are. However, allowing the defense to get more rest only solved part of the problem. There is little the offense can do when individuals in our defensive secondary are continually blowing coverage and allowing easy pass plays of 20+ yards or more and touchdowns. Our defensive line can't get to mobile quarterbacks fast enough when receivers and being allowed to run open down field. It isn't all Winston Guys fault either (though he was a major issue with this).

 

It's pretty clear that Gus is reluctant to run a different style defense than he did in Seattle. In the mean time, other teams with good offenses are wiping the floor with the Jaguars defensive secondary. What can we do??? I don't know; I don't have enough football 'savvy' to even speculate on what to do. All I can do is observe what happens on the field on game day and draw conclusions from it. 

 

I will say that the Steelers are a good team and 'big ben' will be looking to take advantage of our defensive secondary troubles. Right now, I would have to speculate that, given the ineptitude demonstrated by our secondary and the lack of talented depth we have there, our troubles are far from over. While Bortles is demonstrating many of the characteristics wanted in a franchise quarterback, he is nevertheless a rookie and playing with mostly other rookies on offense. He will keep the game interesting while he is on the field but it is unlikely that (given the support he has) he will be able to 'pull out' games without more help from the defense.... help which at this point doesn't look likely to be forthcoming soon.

 

sorry to paint such a bleak picture, but the jags are what they are. We need better players all over our team (except maybe quarterback). I say the drafting priorities are

#1. the offensive line

#2. the defensive secondary

#3. linebackers

#4. running back

 

Maybe Gus needs to talk to his 'life coach' for some inspiration and to let him know that he doesn't have to... nor should he... stick to what he's done in the past as a defensive coordinator. The jaguars, with this roster, aren't even a shadow of the seahawks. He needs to get over it and coach this team.
